Keanu Reeves has shared his honest thoughts on returning for a fifth installment of the action-packed John Wick franchise. The 60-year-old actor, during an appearance on CBS Mornings, admitted that while his “heart” is eager for another round of action, his body—specifically his knees—may not be up to the challenge.
‘Heart Wants It, Knees Don’t’
Reeves offered a candid response when asked about the potential of John Wick 5. “You can never say never — but my knees right now are saying, ‘You can’t do another John Wick,’” he confessed. He further added, “So my heart [wants to], but I don’t know if my knees can do it.” This playful yet truthful remark speaks to the physical toll the action-packed franchise has taken on the actor over the years.
Keanu Reeves Continues to Evolve in Hollywood
While the future of John Wick remains uncertain, Reeves is still very active in the film industry. Currently, he’s promoting his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where he voices the character of Shadow, the film’s villain. His co-star and director Jeff Fowler lightheartedly pointed out the advantage of voice acting—no physical limitations involved. “Which is why you can voice Shadow for, like, decades to come — there are no physical limitations, just your voice!” Fowler quipped, to which Reeves responded, “I’m free!”
The Legacy of John Wick
The John Wick series has proven to be one of the most successful action franchises of the past decade. The first four films have collectively grossed over $1 billion at the global box office, solidifying Reeves’s status as an action movie icon. However, the fourth film, John Wick: Chapter 4, left the character’s fate up in the air. The movie’s ending showed Wick sacrificing himself in a dramatic gun duel with Caine, played by Donnie Yen. Rather than ending Caine’s life, Wick uses his final bullet to kill the villain, Marquis Vincent de Gramont, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård. The film ends ambiguously, with a vision of Wick’s late wife, Helen, as he seemingly dies at the Sacré-Cœur in Paris.
Fans have speculated about the possibility of Wick’s survival, particularly since the filmmakers shot an alternate ending in which Wick survives. According to John Wick director Chad Stahelski, the alternate ending was shown to test audiences, but both Stahelski and Reeves preferred the more open-ended conclusion. This has led many to wonder if a fifth film could eventually emerge, even though Reeves has suggested the story of John Wick finding peace feels complete.
A Possible Spin-Off: Ballerina
While John Wick 5 may be uncertain, fans will get to see Keanu Reeves reprise his iconic role in the upcoming spin-off film, Ballerina. The movie, which stars Ana de Armas, will explore a new chapter in the John Wick universe, taking place between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.
Directed by Len Wiseman, Ballerina features Reeves in a smaller role, and the actor expressed excitement about the project. “Yeah, I got to work with Ana de Armas and the director Len Wiseman, and they had a great script,” Reeves told Entertainment Weekly. “It was fun to put the suit back on.”
Ballerina is set to hit theaters on June 6, 2025, and will give fans one more chance to experience Reeves’s portrayal of the legendary assassin.
