The cultural clash between the United States and the United Kingdom is nothing new, but Kit Harington just pointed out one difference that everyone can relate to. The Game of Thrones star stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and broke down how ordering a simple cup of coffee shows two completely different ways of life.
Harington, who grew up in West London, used his own experiences to show why Brits and Americans approach the coffee counter with totally different mindsets. His funny impressions of how people act on both sides of the Atlantic had the audience laughing and started a big conversation online about who does it better.
Kit Harington’s Coffee Order Impressions Show Two Very Different Worlds
During his chat with Jimmy Fallon, Harington explained that when he walks into a coffee shop in London, the process takes time. He does an impression of himself as a British customer, taking things slow and making friendly conversation with the person behind the counter.
“When I go into a coffee shop, I go, ‘Hello. How are you? Are you good? Yeah. You know, I’m good too. I’m just wondering whether you, I don’t know what I want. Have you got oat milk?’ Sure. ‘You do? Excellent. That’s brilliant. How long have you had that? Okay, great,’” Harington said in his impression.
The actor pointed out that ordering coffee in the UK feels like a meaningful part of the day. Brits like to talk with the barista, ask questions about the menu, and take their time deciding. It is a social moment, not just a transaction.
But when Harington described how Americans order coffee, everything changed. He switched to a short, direct tone and said just two words.
“Coffee, black,” he said flatly.
Harington then explained that this fast, no-extra-words approach can actually shock baristas in London. He joked that the person working at the coffee shop would respond by saying, “I’m sorry, where are all the words?”
The difference comes down to how each culture treats the simple act of getting a morning drink. Americans tend to value speed and efficiency. They know what they want, order it quickly, and move on with their day. British customers, on the other hand, see the coffee shop as a place to connect with others and enjoy the moment.

Social Media Users Pick Sides in the Coffee Shop Etiquette Debate
After clips from The Tonight Show spread across social media, people quickly shared their own stories and opinions. The topic hit close to home for coffee drinkers everywhere.
One British user on X defended Harington’s take by sharing a personal experience in New York. “It’s true. i’m a brit who visited new york and we went in to mcdonalds and i was surprised because i’d always heard american customer service is amazing but the lady at the counter was so fed up with us and we’d only been at the till for 3 seconds,” the user wrote.
But not everyone agreed with the Industry actor’s observations. Some American viewers pushed back, saying that rude behavior exists everywhere.
“I love how Brits act like they’re so much better behaved than Americans. My first time in London I heard a man call a worker the c-word because they didn’t have earl grey,” another X user responded.
Other coffee drinkers pointed out that the American ordering style Harington described does not fit every part of the US. One person from California wrote, “I wish this was true for California – brother….5 shots of this, 10 extra bits of that. I swear you need a degree to take an order and by the time you’re done, it’s a f*cking sugar smoothie and not a coffee.”
The mixed reactions show that while Harington’s point about cultural differences made people laugh, the real world is more complicated. Both countries have chatty customers and rushed ones. But his funny take on the subject got everyone talking about something as simple as ordering a drink.
