British actor Michael Byrne, known for playing villains in the Indiana Jones and Harry Potter movies, died on June 20, 2026, at age 82. Byrne built a career spanning more than six decades with over 170 acting credits across film and television.
A Career Built on Iconic Villain Roles
Byrne became a familiar face to audiences worldwide through his roles in some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. He played Colonel Ernst Vogel, the Nazi officer who assists the villainous Walter Donovan in the quest for the Holy Grail, in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). His character meets a memorable end in a tank accident during the film’s climactic sequence.
In 2010, Byrne joined another major franchise when he was cast as the elderly Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows โ Part 1. The dark wizard character was later portrayed by Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp, and Mads Mikkelsen in the Fantastic Beasts prequel series. His appearance in the Harry Potter film may have been brief, but it secured his place in one of cinema’s most successful franchises.
Beyond Blockbusters: A Versatile Screen Career
Byrne’s filmography shows a performer who moved easily between major studio productions and character-driven dramas. In 1995, he appeared in Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning Braveheart, playing Smythe, an English soldier. He joined the James Bond franchise in 1997, playing Admiral Kelly in Tomorrow Never Dies, starring Pierce Brosnan.
The actor also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York (2002) as newspaper editor Horace Greeley, and played a concentration camp survivor in Apt Pupil (1998) opposite Ian McKellen. His other notable film credits include The Eagle Has Landed (1976), A Bridge Too Far (1977), Force 10 from Navarone (1978), The Sum of All Fears (2002), Quartet (2012), and Diana (2013).
A Distinguished Television Presence
British television audiences knew Byrne from numerous series over the years. From 2008 to 2010, he played Ted Page in the ITV soap Coronation Street, the long-lost father of Gail Platt and ex-lover of Audrey Roberts. He also appeared in Smiley’s People (1982) starring Alec Guinness, Sharpe, Hornblower, Midsomer Murders, Casualty, and Waking the Dead.
Byrne began his acting career in the early 1960s and joined Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company at the Old Vic in 1963. He appeared in productions alongside Olivier, Maggie Smith, and Robert Stephens, including Romeo and Juliet, The Cherry Orchard, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Seagull. His theatre work continued throughout his life, with one of his final stage appearances in Schiller’s Mary Stuart in 2018.

Byrne is survived by his ex-wife Carole Nimmons, who cared for him toward the end of his life, their daughters Tara and Bryony, and grandchildren Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine. A cause of death has not been publicly shared.
