Netflix has been making some tough choices in 2026. The streaming service decided to end several TV shows, ranging from big-budget Westerns to popular Japanese sci-fi dramas. While the company looks closely at viewing numbers and production costs, some of these cancellations have surprised both fans and the people who made the shows. So far this year, the platform has officially stopped work on at least eight original series.
The Abandons Canceled After One Season
The Abandons was one of Netflix’s most expensive new projects. This Western drama featured a strong cast including Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson. The show came from Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy.
The series ended after only one season of seven episodes. Reports show that while the premiere did well, the number of people watching dropped very quickly after that. Kurt Sutter left the show before production finished. He later shared his thoughts on social media about the cancellation.
“Dear Netflix, Next time fear compels you to choose the algorithm over a creator’s vision, remember how that choice unraveled a potentially beautiful project.” – Kurt Sutter, show creator
Hours after posting his message, Sutter said his “passion sincerely apologizes” for the strong words.
The Vince Staples Show Gets High Scores But Low Numbers
The Vince Staples Show had a very different problem. The comedy, created by and starring the rapper Vince Staples, earned excellent reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show scored 94% from critics and 88% from audiences. However, the show ranked at number 1,446 in Netflix’s viewership report for the second half of 2025. After two seasons and 11 total episodes, the streamer decided not to continue.
Terminator Zero Creator Confirms Cancellation
Fans of the animated series Terminator Zero got bad news directly from its creator. Mattson Tomlin confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) in February 2026 that the show had been canceled. He was responding to a fan who asked about the show’s future.
“It was cancelled. The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it. I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in season’s 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is.” – Mattson Tomlin, creator of Terminator Zero
Alice in Borderland Ends Quietly
Alice in Borderland built a very loyal group of fans over its three seasons. The Japanese sci-fi drama pulled in 25 million views for its third season. But Netflix quietly confirmed the show had ended. The news came in the company’s viewership report for the second half of 2025. The report described the third season as the “third and final season of Alice in Borderland”.
The show’s star, Tao Tsuchiya, had earlier shared her own surprise about the show continuing at all.
“I felt like that was a great way to finish the story. So I was kind of surprised when they presented season three to me!” – Tao Tsuchiya, star of Alice in Borderland
More Series Getting the Ax in 2026
Several other shows will not return either.
Billionaires’ Bunker, a Spanish psychological thriller, ended after one season. Netflix confirmed to El País in December 2025 that the show was canceled. It failed to keep viewers watching and received mostly negative reviews.
Class, the Indian adaptation of the hit Spanish series Elite, also stopped after one season. Cast member Gurfateh Pirzada shared the news on Instagram.
“Unfortunately we could not give you another season because life usually has other plans. I still remember it was the last week of 2024 when I heard the news of class being cancelled and I came down with a high fever and thought not again…not another one of my projects getting shelved.” – Gurfateh Pirzada, Class cast member
The live dating show Pop the Balloon will not return for a second season. Hosted by Yvonne Orji, the show first came out in April 2025. It was based on a popular YouTube series.

Miss Governor, created by Tyler Perry, was also canceled. Star Terri J. Vaughn confirmed the news in an Instagram video. She said she was “heartbroken” when she first found out.
“I have to admit, I was quite heartbroken when I first got the info. I really worked my ass off to make that show come to fruition. My heart and the intention behind the show was just, and I still feel it was just so beautiful and purposeful to be able to tell those stories through that character.” – Terri J. Vaughn, star of Miss Governor
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos had earlier explained the company’s thinking. In a 2023 interview, he said the company has “never canceled a successful show”. He explained that shows need to either reach a large audience with a large budget or talk to a small audience with a small budget. For the shows canceled in 2026, the viewership numbers did not match their production costs.
