The Toronto International Film Festival is bringing all of Christopher Nolan‘s movies back to the big screen. The event, called “Christopher Nolan: Grand Designs,” will happen at TIFF Lightbox from July 8 to August 20. This special series comes right before Nolan’s new movie The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026.

The retrospective covers all 12 films Nolan has directed. Every single screening will use 35mm and 70mm film prints. This matches Nolan’s well-known love for traditional film instead of digital cameras. Many of these movies will play in 70mm format in the venue’s biggest and most advanced cinema hall.

Special Events Planned Alongside Nolan Screenings

TIFF added extra programs to make this retrospective more fun. A “Quote Along” screening of Barbie will play right before Oppenheimer on July 18. This is a fun nod to the 2023 “Barbenheimer” event, where both movies opened on the same day and broke box office records.

Fans can also watch ‘The Right Stuff’ on July 24. Nolan has said this movie is one of his personal favorites. A space exploration expert will give a talk before that screening.

The Ringer’s popular podcast ‘The Big Picture’ will record a live episode at TIFF Lightbox on July 8. Hosts Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins will discuss Nolan’s work and screen Tenet.

“Christopher Nolan is one of the most influential voices in contemporary cinema today where each new film is a cultural event,” said Anita Lee, TIFF’s Chief Programming Officer. “These programmes offer audiences of all ages a compelling look at the scale, creativity, and innovation that define film today.”

Nolan’s Long History With the Toronto Film Festival

This retrospective brings Nolan’s festival journey full circle. He first came to TIFF in 1998 with his first movie ‘Following’. That low-budget black-and-white film played in the Discovery section. His most recent TIFF visit was in 2017 for a special IMAX screening of Dunkirk, celebrating IMAX’s 50th anniversary.

Nolan has built one of Hollywood’s most successful careers over the past 30 years. His films have made billions of dollars worldwide while also earning serious awards recognition. Oppenheimer won him the Academy Award for Best Director in 2024.

His Dark Knight trilogy completely changed how studios make superhero movies. Films like Inception and Interstellar became cultural touchstones with their mind-bending ideas. Dunkirk and Tenet pushed the limits of how movies can tell stories with time and sound.

What to Know About ‘The Odyssey’ Release

‘The Odyssey’ hits theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026. This movie marks a major technical first in film history. It is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan has wanted to do this for a long time. Every single frame of the movie comes from IMAX film technology.

The movie adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem of the same name. It follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, on his dangerous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War.

The cast for ‘The Odyssey’ includes many big names:

  • Matt Damon as Odysseus
  • Tom Holland
  • Zendaya
  • Anne Hathaway
  • Lupita Nyong’o
  • Robert Pattinson
  • Charlize Theron
  • Benny Safdie
  • Mia Goth
  • Elliot Page
  • Samantha Morton
  • Ryan Hurst
  • Travis Scott

Fans across the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India can watch ‘The Odyssey’ in regular theaters and IMAX locations starting July 17. The movie will also play in 70mm at select theaters, continuing Nolan’s tradition of offering the full film experience.

The TIFF retrospective gives movie lovers a perfect chance to watch or rewatch all of Nolan’s work on proper film prints. Each screening highlights why Nolan remains one of the few directors who makes people line up for original, big-budget movies that are not sequels or superhero films.
