The buzz around the upcoming DC series Lanterns took a confusing turn this week. Fans noticed that the official teaser trailer vanished from the internet. Then, just as quickly as a new version appeared, it disappeared again. This double removal sparked major online chatter, with many wondering if the show was facing a creative crisis.

However, the truth behind the vanishing trailers is much more ordinary than the conspiracy theories suggest. DC Studios and HBO pulled the promos due to a standard legal issue involving music rights, not because of behind-the-scenes drama or negative fan reactions to the show’s storyline.
The Teaser Disappears From YouTube and Social Media
The original Lanterns teaser debuted on March 4, 2026. It showed Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The preview ended with an official announcement that the show would arrive in August 2026.
But in late April, the video quietly vanished. It was no longer available on the official HBO, HBO Max, and DC YouTube channels. The trailer also disappeared from the studios’ main social media accounts. The links that once played the promo now showed a “private video” message, leaving fans with no official explanation from Warner Bros. or DC.
Because neither James Gunn nor the studios addressed the removal immediately, the rumor mill started spinning rapidly online.
Fan Theories Pointed to a Color Controversy
Many viewers connected the removal to a public dispute about the show’s visual style. Comic book legend Grant Morrison had recently criticized the series for removing the color green from its title and costumes. This criticism grew louder after showrunner Damon Lindelof made a joke on a podcast, calling the color green “stupid” in the context of the show’s title.
Lindelof later issued a public apology. He admitted the joke was dumb and confirmed that green was actually his favorite color. Despite his apology, fans remained upset about the dark and muted color palette shown in the March teaser.

When the trailer was pulled days later, fans assumed Warner Bros. was panicking over the backlash. Some believed the studio was re-editing the footage to add more of the signature Green Lantern glow.
The Real Reason Was a Simple Music License Problem
The actual reason for the removal is much less dramatic. Entertainment Weekly reported that the original Lanterns teaser used a remix of Bruce Springsteen’s song “State Trooper.” The license for that song was only temporary. Once it expired, HBO was legally required to take the video down.
Sources confirmed that the studio always planned to replace the track with original score music from composer Stephanie Economou. This is a standard practice in Hollywood marketing. Trailers for major movies often get pulled and re-uploaded when song rights run out, especially if the initial deal was only for a short promotional window.
While the trailer vanished in the US and Europe, it remained live on HBO Max Asia and various unofficial fan channels. This selective availability further proved the issue was regional music licensing, not a global creative meltdown.
The Second Removal and the August 16 Release Date
After the original trailer was deleted, HBO uploaded a new version. The Bruce Springsteen remix was gone, replaced by a generic instrumental track. This new edit also slipped in a specific detail the first trailer left out: the exact release date.
The updated teaser confirmed that Lanterns will premiere on August 16, 2026.
However, within hours, this second version was also removed from official channels. Fans thought the date might have been wrong or that the studio was changing the launch plan.
The reality was simply that the second video was an unlisted draft or a direct replacement file. Once the studio confirmed the new edit was final and the date was correct, they prepared to officially relaunch the campaign.
James Gunn Confirms the Switch with a Green Teaser
On April 30, 2026, James Gunn put all the rumors to rest. The DC Studios co-CEO took to social media to share a brand new image from the series.
Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light. #Lanterns premieres August 16 on @hbomax.
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) April 30, 2026
The photo shows a hand charging a Green Lantern power battery. The image is filled with bright green light. Fans saw this as a direct response to the earlier complaints about the lack of color in the marketing. Although Gunn did not directly address the “conspiracy theories,” his post served as the official confirmation that the show is on track and the release date is locked in.
