Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni’s characters remain TV’s most talked-about will-they-won’t-they, and the boss behind ‘Law & Order: SVU’ says she wants to keep that flame alive.
The world of Law & Order has changed. Organized Crime is officially over after five seasons. But one thing that hasn’t changed? The electric connection between Captain Olivia Benson and Detective Elliot Stabler. Fans have been watching these two dance around each other for nearly 30 years. And according to the person running the show, that tension is not going anywhere.
Michele Fazekas, the showrunner for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, knows exactly what the audience wants. She also knows that the relationship between Benson and Stabler is the heart of the franchise. Even with Organized Crime canceled in April 2026, Fazekas is making it clear that Stabler will always have a home on SVU—as long as Christopher Meloni has time to show up.
Why the Showrunner Won’t Let Go of the Iconic Duo
Fazekas recently opened up about why she keeps bringing Stabler back into Benson’s world. For her, it is not just about fan service. It is about honoring the core of the show.
“When I was on the show, it was Benson and Stabler, and I personally don’t know about a love interest for her,” Fazekas explained. “I think that is a really important relationship that I do want to serve as much as we can.”
She is careful about how she uses Meloni. She does not want to drop him in for a meaningless two-minute cameo just to get a cheer from the crowd. She wants every appearance to matter.
“I wouldn’t want to just drop him in an unimportant scene,” she told TV Insider. “You have to use him and bring him in with purpose. So, yeah, I would love to bring Stabler back around once in a while.”
This is music to the ears of the Bensler fandom. The two characters almost kissed in Season 24. In Season 27, they shared a heavy, emotional hug at Captain Cragen’s funeral. The show keeps teasing the romance, but it also respects the deep friendship that grounds them.
Christopher Meloni’s Busy Schedule Is the Only Roadblock
So, why isn’t Stabler on every episode if everyone wants him there? The answer is simple: Christopher Meloni is a very busy man.
Fazekas admitted that she is constantly checking to see if Meloni is free. “Chris works a lot. There were a couple of episodes this year, I was like, ‘Hey, is he around?’ and he was working.”
Despite Organized Crime ending, Meloni has already moved on to other projects. He has booked several movies and a starring role in a new Hulu drama from Dan Fogelman. Even Mariska Hargitay admits that scheduling is the hardest part.
Speaking at an NBCUniversal event in April 2026, Hargitay kept hope alive. “I hope so,” she said when asked about a reunion. “I love Chris, and I love acting with Chris, so I’m always open to working with him and getting Benson and Stabler together. They’re happiest when they’re together.”
How Season 27 Handled Stabler’s Absence and Presence
Even when Meloni is not on set, Fazekas finds ways to keep Stabler in the room. In the Season 27 finale, she thought about bringing him in for a big scene. But she made a smart choice to swap him out for another character.
“I thought about bringing him into the season finale. But I don’t regret it, because the scene with Velasco and Benson was probably the scene that I would have done with Stabler and Benson. And I actually really liked that it was Velasco,” she told TVLine.
Earlier in the season, Stabler helped Benson without even stepping onto the screen. During the big January 2026 crossover event, Benson left him a voicemail asking for help with a white supremacy case. He texted her a name and a location that broke the whole case wide open.
“So even when he’s not there, he’s there. His presence is there,” Fazekas noted.

What This Means for SVU Season 28
As SVU moves into Season 28, the show is in a very different place than it was ten years ago. Benson is no longer the codependent partner who fell apart when Stabler left in Season 12. She is a leader. She has a team—Fin, Rollins, Curry, and Griffin—who have her back completely.
Fazekas is focused on telling stories that reflect who Benson is now, not who she was 20 years ago. But she is not closing the door on the past. She wants to explore what the relationship looks like with two people who have grown up.
“She has grown in so many different ways, and that relationship is very different, and Stabler is a different person. So, what are they now together? And so exploring that would be great if Chris Meloni is available,” Fazekas said.
“It’s a very important relationship in Benson’s life.”— Michele Fazekas, SVU Showrunner
The fans are loud and clear. When Organized Crime was canceled, social media exploded with demands to bring Stabler back to SVU for good. One user wrote, “@NBCUniversal @WolfEnt I would like to remind you that SVU still exists and you do NOT need to let the character Elliot Stabler drop off the face of the earth for 10 years again.”
Ice-T, who plays Fin, agrees with the fans. When asked about the Benson and Stabler tension, he joked, “I’ve been telling them to get a room for a long time.”
While there are no official plans for a full-time return yet, Fazekas has made it clear: Stabler is always on her mind. Law & Order: SVU returns with new episodes on NBC in the fall. And if Meloni has a free weekend, do not be surprised if a certain blue-eyed detective shows up at the precinct doors.
