The singer fires back at critics who called her stage outfits ‘inappropriate’ and ‘childlike,’ saying the outrage says more about society than her clothes.

Olivia Rodrigo is not staying silent about the online drama surrounding her fashion choices. The 23-year-old singer recently faced a wave of criticism for wearing babydoll dresses during her “Drop Dead” music video and live shows. Instead of ignoring the noise, she decided to address it head-on in a new interview, and her response has sparked an even bigger conversation.

The controversy started when Rodrigo wore a short, floral babydoll dress with puffed sleeves and matching bloomers. Some people on social media called the look “childlike” and “creepy,” with a few even using harsh labels like “pedo bait” to describe her outfit. But the “Vampire” singer had a powerful response, turning the criticism back on those who made it.

‘That’s Been Making Me So Upset’

In an appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast podcast, Rodrigo explained why the backlash bothered her so much. She made it clear right away that she wasn’t upset about people criticizing her personally.

“That’s been making me so upset. Not even for me. People can say whatever they want.”

The issue, for her, was much bigger than just a dress. She pointed out a major double standard in how people reacted to her clothes. She reminded everyone that she has worn very revealing outfits on stage before, like “a sparkly bra and little shorts,” and nobody called those “inappropriate.” But now, she was fully covered up, and suddenly it was a problem.

“And that wasn’t inappropriate, but me, fully covered up in a dress that people deem to be childlike was inappropriate,” she said.

A Harsh Truth About ‘Normalizing Pedophilia’

Rodrigo did not hold back when explaining why she thought the public’s reaction was the real problem. She connected the criticism to a much darker issue in society.

“I just think it really shows how we really normalize pedophilia in our culture,” she stated firmly.

She continued by breaking down the unfair rules that society places on girls from a very young age. She pointed out how girls are constantly told to cover up to avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention.

“And also it’s just this rhetoric that we’re fed as girls since we’re so little, which is, ‘Don’t wear that because then a man is going to sexualize your body and it’s your fault.’ It’s so weird,” Rodrigo added.

Grunge Icons, Not ‘Sexy Baby’

Rodrigo wanted to clear up the confusion about why she chose the babydoll style in the first place. She wasn’t trying to look “sexy” or “innocent.” Instead, she was paying tribute to her musical heroes from the 1990s.

She explained that she felt “cool” looking like Kathleen Hanna from the punk band Bikini Kill and Courtney Love from Hole. These rock stars mixed feminine dresses with a tough, grunge attitude, and Rodrigo wanted to capture that same spirit.

“I didn’t think that I looked sexy in that at all,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is so cool.’ I feel like I look like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love, all these people who are my heroes.”

She argued that changing how she dresses just to avoid “some freak” having bad thoughts is completely missing the point.

“I just think if we start dressing in a way that’s like, ‘I don’t want some f–king freak to think that I’m sexy like a baby’ or some crazy thing like that, I think it’s losing the plot a little bit,” she said.

Fans Defend Rodrigo’s Right to Dress Freely

While the criticism was loud, the support for Rodrigo was even louder. Fans quickly flooded social media to defend her, praising her for speaking up about the double standards women face.

One fan pointed out the absurdity of blaming the victim, saying, “People will always blame women and the way they dress for men’s disgusting thoughts over blaming men for having those disgusting thoughts. Her dresses were never a problem.”

Another supporter praised Rodrigo’s emotional intelligence, writing, “This was an incredible response to the silly online discord. She’s so eloquent and is 100 percent correct.”

Many fans noted that the babydoll style has been around for decades. It became a major fashion statement in the 1960s and was later adopted by the riot grrrl movement in the 90s as a symbol of rebellion, not submission. For Rodrigo, it’s a way to reclaim her power on her own terms.

What’s Next for the ‘Guts’ Star

Even with all the noise about her clothes, Rodrigo is staying focused on her music. She is currently preparing to release her third studio album.

The new album is titled ‘You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.’ It is scheduled to arrive on music streaming platforms on June 12.

Along with the new music, fans can also look forward to seeing her live. She will be hitting the road for the ‘Unraveled Tour,’ a massive 65-date tour that kicks off on September 25.

As she moves forward with her new music era, Rodrigo remains protective of her younger fans. She wants to make sure they never feel ashamed of their clothing choices or responsible for the bad behavior of others.

“I’m just very protective of younger women, girls, and I don’t ever want them to be fed that rhetoric,” she concluded. “You shouldn’t be responsible for some guy sexualizing you in a way that was never your intention.”
