Ghostbusters fans finally have a name for the long-awaited animated series coming to Netflix. On June 6, 2026, which marked Ghostbusters Day celebrating the anniversary of the original 1984 film, Sony Pictures and Netflix revealed the official title and logo for the new show. The series is called Ghostbusters: Night Shift and will debut exclusively on Netflix in 2027. This marks the first official Ghostbusters animated series in nearly 30 years, since Extreme Ghostbusters aired in 1997.
The Announcement Happened at the Iconic Hook and Ladder 8 Firehouse
Sony Pictures held a special event at the FDNY Hook and Ladder 8 firehouse in New York City, the same building that has served as the Ghostbusters’ base since the original movie. During the presentation, showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan joined Ghost Corps executive producers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan to share the big news with fans.
The new logo features the classic “ghost in a red circle with a line through it” symbol, but with a fresh black and yellow color scheme. A clawed hand reaches out from the symbol, giving it a darker, more mysterious look.
The Show Takes Place in 1990s Manhattan During Walter Peck’s First Mayoral Run
Ghostbusters: Night Shift follows a brand new group of Ghostbusters in Manhattan during the early 1990s. The show takes place while Walter Peck is running for mayor for the first time. For those who need a refresher, Peck was the EPA administrator who clashed with the original Ghostbusters and ordered their ghost containment unit shut down, which caused all the captured spirits to escape. He later returned as New York’s mayor in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024).
Who Is Making the Show
The executive producer team reads like a who’s who of Ghostbusters royalty. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, who co-wrote the recent live-action films Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, are on board as executive producers. Dan Aykroyd, who played Dr. Raymond Stantz in the original movies and co-wrote the screenplay with Harold Ramis, also serves as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, and Amie Karp.
The animation is being handled by Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and KPop Demon Hunters. Early reports suggest the animation style will take cues from the Spider-Verse films, aiming for something “tactile and tangible” rather than photorealistic.
“Ghostbusters has always been a really surprising blend of horror, comedy, sci-fi and fantasy.” – Executive producer and showrunner Ben Hibon
This Is the Third Ghostbusters Animated Series
Ghostbusters has a strong history in animation. The first animated series, The Real Ghostbusters, ran from 1986 to 1991 on ABC and in syndication, producing 140 episodes. It featured many of the original characters and voices from the movies. Then in 1997, Extreme Ghostbusters aired for one season with 40 episodes, following a new team of Ghostbusters alongside a returning Egon Spengler, voiced by Maurice LaMarche. That show had an edgier, more ’90s-style look and feel.
Ghostbusters: Night Shift will be the third entry in that animated legacy, and the first in nearly three decades.
There’s Also a Ghostbusters Animated Movie Coming to Netflix
The new series is not the only animated Ghostbusters project in the works. Sony and Netflix are also developing a Ghostbusters animated feature film, but details on that project remain scarce. Some reports compare it to a “class 5 full roaming vapor” in terms of how hard it is to track down information.
What Fans Are Saying
Early fan reactions to the title and logo have been mostly positive, though some remain cautious. The series has been in development since at least 2022, when word first broke that Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan were producing an animated show for Netflix. A previous animated series titled Ghostbusters: Ecto Force was planned years ago but never made it to production.
Social media conversations have been buzzing with nostalgia. Many fans who grew up watching The Real Ghostbusters are excited to introduce their own kids to a new animated take on the franchise. The show’s setting in the 1990s has also sparked interest, as that era lines up with when many millennial fans were first discovering Ghostbusters.
One fan online wrote that the reveal made them feel like a kid again. Another pointed out that having Dan Aykroyd involved as an executive producer gives the project real credibility and keeps it connected to the original spirit of the movies.
