House of the Dragon is returning for its third season, and the premiere episode is set to be the show’s longest season opener yet. HBO confirmed that episode one will run for 72 minutes when it debuts on June 21, 2026. This extra length gives the show room to finally show the Battle of the Gullet, a huge naval fight that fans have been waiting to see since season two.
Season 3 Premiere Runtime and Release Details
According to HBO’s official schedule, the House of the Dragon season three premiere will air from 9:00 PM to 10:12 PM Eastern Time on June 21, 2026. The 72-minute runtime includes credits and the “Inside the Episode” segment that plays at the end of most HBO episodes. Even with those additions, this makes the premiere longer than both previous season openers. Season one’s first episode ran for 65 minutes, while season two’s opener was 58 minutes. This means the new premiere is a full 14 minutes longer than last season’s start.
The eight-episode season will release weekly on HBO and stream on HBO Max (called Max in some regions). The season finale is scheduled for August 9, 2026. Viewers in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and India can watch new episodes at the same time as the US broadcast, though local streaming times may vary depending on the platform.
The Battle of the Gullet Takes Center Stage
The extended runtime makes sense because House of the Dragon is finally bringing the Battle of the Gullet to the screen. This naval battle was originally planned for season two but got pushed to season three. It is one of the bloodiest fights in the history of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world. The battle happens at sea with both ships and dragons, and it is a major turning point in the Targaryen civil war between the Blacks and the Greens.
Ryan Condal, the showrunner, previously compared the challenge of filming this battle to the Helm’s Deep fight from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. He said such an important moment could not just be talked about or shown from a distance. The team had to build it fully and show everything.
World Record Set During Filming
The production team already made history while shooting the premiere episode. During a panel at the SXSW London festival, the producers revealed that they set a world record by igniting 23 stunt performers simultaneously in a single take. This record-breaking stunt is part of the Battle of the Gullet sequence.
The scale of the production was enormous. The team used:
- 15,000 stunt crowd participants
- 3,500 props
- 25 tons of propane
- Four ship sets
- More than three million litres of water
The filming also involved a wet tank, a dry tank, and an underwater tank to capture all the different angles of the battle.
How the Premiere Compares to Other Long Episodes
While 72 minutes is long for a season premiere, it is not the longest House of the Dragon episode ever. The season two finale, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was,” holds the record at 84 minutes. The season two episode six, “Smallfolk,” runs for 77 minutes. So the season three premiere will be the third-longest episode in the show’s history so far.
For comparison, the longest Game of Thrones episode was “The Long Night” at 82 minutes, which featured the Battle of Winterfell. The new House of the Dragon premiere comes very close to that length.
What to Expect From Season 3
Showrunner Ryan Condal described season three as the most action-packed chapter of the series so far. He also said the Battle of the Gullet is only the beginning. More big fights and important story moments are coming throughout the eight episodes.
The season covers more events from the book Fire & Blood, which is the source material for the show. HBO already renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth season back in November 2025, so the story will continue beyond this year.
