The Night Agent just wrapped its third season on Netflix, and while Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) was nowhere to be seen, the show made one thing very clear: she was never far from Peter Sutherland’s (Gabriel Basso) mind. The season ended with Peter alive, Jacob Monroe dead, and a disgraced president leaving the White House. But for fans of the show’s central romance, the biggest news is that the path is finally clear for Peter to go find the woman he loves.

Season 3 dropped on February 19, 2026, and consisted of 10 episodes. While the action focused on financial crimes, terrorist attacks, and a conspiracy inside the Oval Office, the “shadow” of Rose hung over every decision Peter made.
Why Rose Was Missing From The Night Agent Season 3
To understand why a reunion is now possible, you have to remember how Season 2 ended. After Peter helped stop a bioterror attack at the U.N., he forced Rose to promise to stay away from him. His life as a Night Agent was too dangerous, and he could not bear the thought of his enemies using her to get to him. She reluctantly agreed and returned to her life in California.

Creator Shawn Ryan told The Hollywood Reporter that leaving Rose out of Season 3 was a purely creative choice, not a scheduling conflict or a sign that Buchanan was fired. The writers initially tried to make a Peter-and-Rose-centric season work, but they hit roadblocks.
“We asked, ‘Well, how would a Peter-centric season three without Rose work?’ And ultimately, that was the most creative, satisfying thing,” Ryan explained.

He personally called Buchanan to explain the decision, and he was clear that he wants her back. “I still have hopes and intentions that Rose isn’t done on our show,” Ryan confirmed.
Peter Never Moved On: ‘He Still Has That Love for Her’
Even though Rose was not physically in Season 3, her presence was felt constantly. Peter carries the weight of losing her throughout the entire investigation. In one key scene in episode four, while playing pool with journalist Isabel De Leon (Genesis Rodriguez), he opens up about the sadness of having to give Rose up.
Actor Gabriel Basso was adamant that Peter should not get a new love interest. He told Entertainment Weekly that he shot down that idea early in the writing process.
“I was like, ‘No, no. I think it would undermine his commitment to Rose,’” Basso said.
He explained that Peter and Rose only separated because of dangerous circumstances, not because the love died. “So I think he still has that love for her,” Basso added. “He still very much values her and thinks about her, cares about her.”
The Night Agent Season 3 Finale Cleared the Way for Reunion
The ending of Season 3 essentially cleaned house for Peter. In the finale, the conspiracy is exposed. President Hagan and First Lady Jenny Hagan are forced to resign after their illegal campaign donations are revealed. Jacob Monroe, the shadowy broker who was blackmailing Peter, is killed.
With Monroe gone and the corrupt administration out of power, the specific threats that forced Peter to push Rose away no longer exist. Peter even tells his boss that he wants a break from Night Action to find some “balance” in his life. In the final shot of the season, Peter is seen sitting in Central Park, eating an ice cream bar—a symbol that he is finally allowing himself a moment of peace.
“Now that things are calmer, maybe this means he’s willing to find Rose again,” CinemaBlend noted in their analysis of the finale. Basso echoed this sentiment, telling EW that if Peter ever had the chance to prioritize his personal life, “she’d be the first person he would reach out to.”

What This Means for a Potential Season 4
While Netflix has not officially renewed The Night Agent for a fourth season, the show remains one of the streamer’s biggest hits, and creator Shawn Ryan is already writing. Basso is optimistic about the possibilities.
“Season 4 is sort of, anything is possible, as opposed to a constant continuation,” Basso told EW.
The show has a history of bringing characters back after absences. Fola Evans-Akingbola (Chelsea Arrington) missed almost all of Season 2 but returned as a series regular for Season 3. The same could easily happen for Buchanan.
For Peter, the mission is finally over. For the first time since the show began, he is free to choose his own path. And every hint from the actors and the showrunner suggests that path leads straight back to Rose.
