The long wait for the return of the Targaryen civil war is finally ending. House of the Dragon Season 3 is set to premiere on June 21, 2026, bringing the Dance of the Dragons back to screens worldwide. After a season 2 finale that focused more on political maneuvering than large-scale battles, the new season promises to deliver the large-scale action fans have been waiting for.
Showrunner Ryan Condal has described the upcoming season as the most action-heavy installment of the series so far. The production team reportedly set a world record during filming by igniting 23 stunt performers simultaneously in a single take for the season premiere. This sequence is part of the Battle of the Gullet, a major naval clash in the Targaryen civil war.
What Happened at the End of Season 2?
The season 2 finale set up the war to come. The episode saw Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) reunite at Dragonstone, where Alicent offered to open the gates of King’s Landing to Rhaenyra in exchange for her and her family’s safety. Rhaenyra refused to spare her son, Aegon II, who she views as a usurper.
Meanwhile, Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) experienced a vision through Alys Rivers that showed him the future, including the threat of the White Walkers and a glimpse of Daenerys Targaryen. The vision convinced him to finally swear his loyalty to Rhaenyra, telling her he was “meant to serve you until death.”
In King’s Landing, Lord Larys Strong convinced the injured King Aegon II to flee the city, believing his brother Aemond would kill him. Aemond, now serving as Prince Regent, started preparing for war and burned a town in the Crownlands after his sister Helaena revealed he would die at the God’s Eye.
Returning Cast Members for Season 3
More than 20 cast members are returning for the new season. The main cast includes Emma D’Arcy as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower, and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.
Other returning cast members include Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Ewan Mitchell as Prince Aemond Targaryen, and Tom Glynn-Carney as King Aegon II Targaryen. Rhys Ifans returns as Ser Otto Hightower, while Harry Collett is back as Prince Jacaerys Velaryon.
New Characters Joining the Dance
The new season will introduce several new characters to the conflict. Tommy Flanagan joins the cast as Ser Roderick Dustin for Team Black, while Dan Fogler plays Ser Torrhen Manderly, also for Team Black.
Other new characters include Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of Alicent and Viserys, who will enter the war for Team Green. The cast also includes Ser Ormund Hightower, Alysanne Blackwood, Ser Jon Roxton, and Ser Luthor Largent, among others.
Some characters will not be returning. Eve Best played Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, who died during the Battle of Rook’s Rest in season 2. Simon Russell Beale, who played Ser Simon Strong, also appears to be absent from the cast list.
New Season Premiere Details
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and will also be available on HBO Max. The season will consist of eight episodes, releasing weekly on Sundays, with the finale scheduled for August 9, 2026.
In India, the series will stream on JioHotstar starting June 21. UK viewers can watch on NOW, Sky, and HBO Max starting June 22. The premiere episode is expected to run for approximately 72 minutes.
The Battle of the Gullet and What to Expect
The season premiere will feature the Battle of the Gullet, one of the bloodiest sea battles in Westeros history. Filming for this sequence took place at multiple locations in North Wales, including Llanddwyn Beach and Penmon Point, which served as the backdrop for House Velaryon’s Driftmark.
The production utilized 15,000 stunt crowd participants, 3,500 props, and 25 tons of propane for the battle sequence. Ryan Condal compared the scale of the episode to the Helm’s Deep battle from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, saying a defining moment of that kind had to be fully shown, not just referenced.
“The battle will reportedly feature in the season premiere and act as a catalyst that alters the course of the war.”

Key Changes from the Book
The series continues to adapt George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood with some notable changes. One of the most significant plot points involves King Aegon II, who will reportedly focus on seeking revenge against his brother Aemond rather than fighting Rhaenyra.
The season also appears to be changing Daemon Targaryen’s storyline. In the book, Daemon spends this period with a dragonrider named Nettles, but set photos suggest he will be more involved in army-based action in the show.
A scene from the Season 3 trailer shows a heavily scarred Aegon saying, “I’m going to kill my brother, or die in the attempt.” This shift in focus creates a potential Green vs. Green conflict, with Aemond becoming the main opposition against Rhaenyra.
