Ted Lasso is back on Apple TV+ with its fourth season, and Jason Sudeikis is opening up about what lies ahead for the beloved comedy series. The actor and co-creator recently addressed swirling rumors about a possible spin-off show while also sharing exciting news about the potential for additional seasons beyond the current run.
The show’s return has sparked plenty of conversation among viewers. Season 4, which started streaming on August 5, 2026, takes the optimistic American coach in a fresh direction. Ted Lasso now leads AFC Richmond’s new women’s football team, the Lady Greyhounds, instead of the men’s squad that fans grew to love over the first three seasons.
Jason Sudeikis Shuts Down Spin-Off Rumors
For months, speculation ran wild that the women’s team storyline was originally planned as a separate spin-off series. Some fans believed the end montage in the Season 3 finale was setting up a new show focused on the women’s squad. Jason Sudeikis put those rumors to rest in a recent conversation with ScreenRant.
“Oh gosh. Well, that was never true. The whole end montage was with the spirit and the idea definitely being that the show was over, but to leave some things open-ended and let people—fans of the show or even the more creative lot that like to do their own sort of fiction—whether for others to consume or just for each other. Here are a bunch of launching-off points for you.”
Sudeikis explained that the women’s team idea was never meant to be a separate project. Instead, it became the natural direction when the creative team decided to bring Ted Lasso back for a fourth season.
“[A spinoff] was never the case, but eventually, at some point when the desire to come back was a clearer path for us, it was a no-brainer that it was going to be the women’s team. We had a few dalliances of, ‘Oh! Would it be maybe over here in the States?’ But it just felt right once we figured out the reason why Ted would go back, because that happens all the time. You leave places, you go back to places, see what happens and who’s changed and what’s changed.”
The actor made it clear that the Season 3 finale was designed to leave possibilities open rather than set up a specific spin-off. The decision to focus on the women’s team came later when the group felt there was more story to tell.
Apple Executives Share Optimism About Season 5
While Ted Lasso Season 5 has not been officially confirmed by Apple TV+, top executives have expressed strong interest in continuing the series. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services, shared his thoughts on the show’s future.
“I hope so. It’s certainly good enough for that. So I think there are plenty of stories to go on. We’ll show up. No worries.”
Cue also reflected on how the show nearly ended after Season 3. He admitted that everyone involved felt the story had reached its natural conclusion at that time.
“Look, we were done. Jason was done. One of the things that I love about working with the best people is we felt like we had reached the top. There was nothing more to the story. We wanted it to end. And Jason and the team came up with this whole brand-new story on their own that we loved. There was a completely different angle to it, but it’s going to bring all the heart. The love, the laughter, all the things that you loved about it. We got to believe again.”
Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming, also provided an update on the show’s progress. He revealed that Jason Sudeikis is already thinking about the next chapter.
“Jason’s still hard at work on season four, and I know he’s looking to jump into the next season soon, but to my knowledge, I don’t think we’ve gotten started on it yet.”
A New Direction for the Beloved Series
Ted Lasso Season 4 marks a significant shift for the show. After three seasons following the men’s AFC Richmond team, the series now centers on the club’s second-division women’s squad. This change came after Sudeikis initially declared the story complete following the Season 3 finale.
In a July 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sudeikis shared that he had mapped out an additional three-season arc for the show. This plan suggests that Season 4 could be the start of a new trilogy, much like the first three seasons covered the men’s team journey.
“I know I needed this. I needed it as much as other people do.”
The actor also admitted that he initially turned down the opportunity to return for Season 4. Reports indicate he was offered over $1 million per episode but had doubts about revisiting the character. He eventually changed his mind and came back to lead the new storyline.
What to Expect from Season 4
The new season brings back familiar faces alongside fresh talent. Hannah Waddingham returns as Rebecca Welton, Juno Temple reprises her role as Keeley Jones, and Brendan Hunt is back as Coach Beard. Brett Goldstein also returns as Roy Kent.
New cast members include Tanya Reynolds as Coach Alice Chilton, along with Jude Mack, Abbie Hern, Faye Marsay, and others who make up the Lady Greyhounds team.
Notably, several stars from the men’s team, including Phil Dunster, Toheeb Jimoh, and Cristo Fernández, are not expected to appear in Season 4. The show has moved in a different direction that focuses on the women’s side of the sport.
Season 4 consists of 10 episodes, with new installments dropping every Wednesday on Apple TV+. The season will conclude on October 7, 2026.
