The battle for human survival continues. Record of Ragnarok Season 2 arrived on Netflix in two parts in 2023, delivering more epic fights between legendary gods and humanity’s greatest figures. With the score tied, the stage is set for Record of Ragnarok Season 3, which is scheduled to premiere on December 10, 2025.

The series presents a simple but high-stakes scenario. The gods have convened to decide humanity’s fate and vote for extinction. The valkyrie Brunhilde proposes a last-chance alternative: a one-on-one tournament called Ragnarok. Thirteen gods will face thirteen human champions from history. If humanity wins seven of the thirteen matches, they earn the right to survive for another thousand years.

The Battles of Season Two

Season 2 presented three major battles that pushed the tournament to a tense tie. The season was split into two halves, with the first part releasing in January 2023 and the second in July 2023.

The first match featured Heracles, the beloved demigod of justice from the Greek pantheon, against Jack the Ripper, the infamous serial killer from London. This battle was a conflict of ideals, pitting pure good against pure evil. The fight took place in a recreated London, which Jack used to his advantage. Despite Heracles’ noble nature, Jack’s cunning and tactical cruelty secured a second victory for humanity.

The next bout was a clash of raw power. Shiva, the Indian God of Destruction, faced Raiden Tameemon, history’s greatest sumo wrestler. This fast-paced and intense fight showcased Shiva’s devastating dance of destruction against Raiden’s absolute control over his own muscles. It was a brutal exchange where both combatants pushed their bodies to the limit, ultimately ending with Shiva claiming victory for the gods.

The final match of the season brought a shocking twist. Buddha, originally a god, defected to fight for humanity. His decision caused an uproar among the divine council. He was initially set to fight Zerofuku, a composite god of misfortune. Their philosophically charged showdown was interrupted by the demon Hajun. Buddha’s journey to defeat this new threat became one of the season’s most emotional and visually distinct fights, ending with his victory and leveling the overall score.

“I canโ€™t wait to see how that one move by Nikola Tesla appears on screen,” series writer Shinya Umemura told Netflix, hinting at future animated action.

A Noticeable Upgrade in Animation

The first season of Record of Ragnarok faced significant criticism from fans for its slide-show-like animation and heavy use of static images. For Season 2, the production studio made clear efforts to address these complaints. The result was a noticeable improvement, with smoother fight choreography and more fluid movement during key action sequences.

However, the season was not without its own critiques. The solution for better fluidity came largely through an increased use of 3D CGI animation. While this allowed for more dynamic camera work, some viewers felt the blend of traditional and computer-generated visuals was sometimes jarring and did not fully complement the series’ original art style. Despite this, the general consensus was that the animation quality took a significant step up from the first season.

Where the Standings Currently Lie

By the end of Season 2, the score between gods and humanity is perfectly balanced at three wins each. The victories and defeats from all seasons so far are detailed below.

This sets the stage for the next explosive match in Season 3. The story is set to continue with the seventh round, which will pit Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, against Hades, the majestic King of the Greek Underworld. This highly anticipated fight will be the first to break the tense deadlock.

“Much time has passed since the explosive ending to the second season. Thanks to the support of our fans, the third season is finally here!” said story creator Takumi Fukui.

The first two seasons of Record of Ragnarok are available to stream in their entirety on Netflix, providing the perfect opportunity to catch up before the battle resumes this December.
