Actress Cristin Milioti has given fans a clear and disappointing answer about her future in the Gotham City universe created by director Matt Reeves. Milioti, who played Sofia Falcone in the hit HBO series The Penguin, stated she is definitively not appearing in the upcoming film The Batman: Part II. She also shared that there is still no official word on a second season for her acclaimed television show.

The news came while Milioti was promoting her new film Buddy with co-star Topher Grace at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. When asked about a potential second season for The Penguin, Milioti responded, “Yeah, there’s no official word on anything”. She quickly added, “And I would love nothing more, truly”. Her co-star Topher Grace passionately supported her, exclaiming to any decision-makers, “What are you doing? This is the greatest thing I have ever seen on [television]. We’ve got to have a season two”.

A Direct Answer on The Batman Part II

Milioti did not leave any room for speculation regarding the much-anticipated movie sequel. She directly confirmed she is “definitively not in [The Batman: Part II] which is a bummer”. This aligns with previous comments from director Matt Reeves, who explained last fall that the film’s script was too far along by the time The Penguin series was in development to include Sofia Falcone’s story.

“We were so deep into the [Batman 2] script by the time we were in the show,” Reeves explained. “But we’ll see. I think she’s incredible. What she did in the show is just astonishing”.

Reeves noted that trying to rewrite the film to include her character might “upset the apple cart” given the specific direction of the story. However, he left the door open for Milioti to return to the “Reeves-verse” in a future project, stating it would be “really exciting to do something with her”.

The Critical Success of The Penguin and Sofia Falcone

Milioti’s performance as the ruthless and ambitious mob heir Sofia Falcone was a major highlight of The Penguin. The series, a spin-off from 2022’s The Batman, followed Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb as he fought to control Gotham’s criminal underworld after the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone’s death. Sofia, Carmine’s daughter, became his primary rival.

The show was a success with critics and audiences when it premiered in September 2024. For her work, Milioti won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series or Anthology Series or Movie in September 2025. In her acceptance speech, she expressed deep gratitude for the role.

“It’s very hard to make sense of being alive right now in this world, so I’m deeply grateful for the bright spots,” Milioti said. “Getting to inhabit this woman was a bright spot for me, despite it being very grisly. Playing her felt like flying”.

What Could Happen in The Penguin Season 2?

With the first season ending with Sofia locked up in Arkham Asylum, Milioti has previously shared her ideas for where the character could go next. Her number one hope is for Sofia to break out.

“Obviously, I would want to see her get out of Arkham. Thatโ€™s like number one. I donโ€™t want her in there,” Milioti stated. “So I want to see her get out there, and then exact revenge”.

She suggested that a stint in Arkham could turn Sofia into an even more dangerous “loose cannon,” with her quest for power becoming broader and more unpredictable. The season finale also revealed a major comic book connection: that Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, is actually Sofia’s half-sister. This opens narrative possibilities for a team-up or a major conflict in a future season.

Despite fan enthusiasm and critical praise, the future of The Penguin remains officially undecided. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc has mentioned that the series was initially conceived as a limited series, so planning for a second season is a new consideration. Colin Farrell, who plays the lead, has also said he has “no idea if it’s happening”. He is, however, confirmed to reprise his role as the Penguin in The Batman: Part II.

The Batman Part II Release and Other Updates

The sequel film, The Batman: Part II, is currently scheduled for release in theaters on October 1, 2027. Director Matt Reeves has indicated that the film is now in the preparation stage, which has been the main priority. He has also expressed hope to revisit plans for other characters and stories within his Batman universe now that the sequel film is moving forward.

For now, fans of Cristin Milioti’s powerful performance as Sofia Falcone will have to wait for news on a second season of The Penguin for more of her story. Her absence from the next Batman film is confirmed, but the praise from the director and the unfinished business in Gotham suggest her journey may not be over.
