The seventh episode of One Piece Season 2 arrived on Netflix on March 10, 2026, and it is already being called the most emotional chapter of the live-action series so far. Titled “Reindeer Shames,” the hour-long episode focuses entirely on Tony Tony Chopper, the blue-nosed reindeer who dreams of becoming a doctor. Viewers finally get to see the heartbreaking backstory of how Chopper met the quack doctor Dr. Hiriluk, how he lost his father figure, and how Luffy found a way to honor the man who taught Chopper about pirates and dreams.
The episode runs for 60 minutes and is now streaming globally on Netflix alongside the rest of the season’s eight episodes.
The Story of How Chopper Met Dr. Hiriluk
The episode begins at Kureha’s castle on Drum Island. Chopper is hiding from the Straw Hat crew, feeling shy and unsure about these strangers. Sanji and Luffy try to get him to open up. Slowly, Chopper begins to explain his past, and the show takes viewers back in time to when he was just a reindeer who ate the Hito Hito no Mi (Human-Human Fruit).
In the flashback, a young Chopper is shown living alone in the snowy mountains. Because of his blue nose and his ability to stand and walk like a human, the other reindeer reject him. Humans see him as a monster and chase him away. One day, he gets shot and is badly injured.
That is when Dr. Hiriluk finds him. Hiriluk is a quirky, eccentric doctor who is not taken seriously by most people on the island. He is often called a quack by Dr. Kureha. But Hiriluk sees something special in the injured reindeer. He takes Chopper in, patches him up, and promises never to hurt him.
A Father-Son Bond Forms Between Hiriluk and Chopper
The relationship between Hiriluk and Chopper grows into something beautiful. Hiriluk gives Chopper his signature pink top hat after their first argument, calling it a peace offering. He also gives the reindeer his name: Tony Tony Chopper.
Hiriluk teaches Chopper about many things, including pirates. He explains that a pirate is not just a criminal but someone who has big dreams and never gives up. He shows Chopper a pirate flag and tells him it is a symbol of hope and courage. Hiriluk tells Chopper that one day, he will find his destiny beyond the sea.
For the first time in his life, Chopper feels loved and accepted. The two share many happy moments together, with Hiriluk acting as a father and Chopper as an eager son.
Chopper’s Mistake and Hiriluk’s Sacrifice
The happiness does not last. Hiriluk becomes very sick. Knowing he does not have much time left, he tries to push Chopper away to protect him from the pain of watching him die. Chopper, confused and desperate to save his father, runs off to the Valley of Death to find a magical mushroom that he believes can cure any illness.
Meanwhile, Hiriluk learns that the kingdom is suffering under the cruel rule of King Wapol. He decides to go to Drum Castle to try and save the people, even if it costs him his life. Before leaving, he drinks a soup that Chopper prepared with the mushroom.
Back at the lab, Chopper excitedly shows Dr. Kureha the book with the mushroom he picked. Kureha immediately realizes it is a poisonous mushroom. She yells at Chopper, and the young reindeer breaks down in tears, realizing he may have poisoned his beloved father.
At the castle, Hiriluk confronts Wapol. He gives a speech about how the people of Drum Kingdom will be saved in the future. He asks Dalton, a soldier, not to hurt his son, Chopper. Then, Hiriluk detonates an explosion in the throne room, sacrificing himself to make a point and inspire hope.
Dalton Shows Kindness to Young Chopper
After the explosion, Wapol orders Dalton to kill the “monster son.” Dalton goes outside and finds Chopper in the courtyard. Chopper transforms into his larger, stronger form, ready to fight. But Dalton does not attack. Instead, he tells Chopper to go home, explaining that it was his father’s final wish.
This moment changes Dalton. He decides he can no longer serve under Wapol and turns away from the cruel king.
Chopper returns to Hiriluk’s lab, where he finds Kureha going through Hiriluk’s things. Chopper pleads with her to teach him how to be a doctor. At first, she refuses, but eventually she agrees. Chopper begins his medical training under Kureha, determined to carry on Hiriluk’s dream of curing illnesses.
Luffy’s Touching Tribute to Dr. Hiriluk
Back in the present, Luffy quietly listens to the end of Chopper’s story. Without saying a word, he leaves the room. Using his Gum-Gum powers, he picks up Dr. Hiriluk’s pirate flag and places it high on the wall of the castle, where it can be seen by everyone.
This simple act means everything to Chopper. Luffy turns to him and says, “I’m a monster too. Isn’t it great?” It is Luffy’s way of telling Chopper that he belongs with them and that his father’s dream still lives on.
Fans online have reacted strongly to this scene. Many called it the most powerful moment of the season. On social media, viewers shared how the scene made them cry, praising how the live-action adaptation captured the emotional weight of the original manga.
A Special Treat for Longtime Fans
Episode 7 also includes a hidden gift for fans of the anime. During the flashback, Hiriluk whistles a tune while making coffee after rescuing Chopper. Later, Chopper hums the same song while happily reading a book. The tune is “Doctor Tony Tony Chopper,” a song originally performed by the anime voice actors for Chopper and Luffy.
It is a small but meaningful reference that does not distract from the story. New viewers will simply hear a nice melody, but longtime fans will recognize it as a loving tribute to the source material.
How the Cast Brought Chopper to Life
Bringing Chopper to the screen was a massive challenge. The live-action series used a combination of techniques to make the character feel real. Mikaela Hoover provided the voice and motion capture for Chopper. On set, performer N’kone Mametja acted as the physical proxy for Chopper, crawling around and interacting with the cast to give them someone to react to.
For Chopper’s larger “heavy point” form, Gavin Gomes wore full prosthetics. The cast joked that Chopper was the highest-maintenance actor they worked with because it took so many people to create him. Emily Rudd (Nami) laughed saying, “We do so many takes for him.”
Jacob Romero (Usopp) explained that having a live presence on set helped build an emotional connection to the CGI character. The hard work paid off, as critics and fans agree that Chopper looks and feels like a living part of the show’s world.
What Happens at the End of the Episode
While the emotional story with Chopper takes center stage, the episode also sets up the season finale. In the town near the castle, Dalton notices smoke from a campfire. He tells Usopp and Zoro to wait while he investigates. Meanwhile, Vivi spots Miss All Sunday (Nico Robin) in the crowd and realizes the Baroque Works agents are closing in.
Dalton is shot by Wapol’s men, leaving his fate uncertain. The episode ends with tensions rising, setting up a dramatic final episode to close out the season.
