The second season of Netflix’s live-action One Piece has arrived, and it brings one of the most bizarre villains from the original manga to the screen. King Wapol, the tyrannical ruler of Drum Kingdom, makes his presence felt across episodes 6 through 8, but his time as a threat comes to a dramatic end. Viewers who have already binged the eight-episode season are asking the same question: Did Wapol actually die after Luffy sent him flying out of the castle window?

The answer is now clear after the season’s full release on March 10, 2026. The live-action adaptation stays true to the source material while delivering a visually spectacular conclusion to the Drum Island arc. Here is exactly what happened to the tin-plate king and how his defeat changes everything for the Straw Hat Pirates.

Who Is King Wapol and Why Does He Want Drum Kingdom Back?

Before understanding his fate, it helps to know why Wapol matters in the first place. Rob Colletti, a Broadway-trained actor known for School of Rock and The Book of Mormon, brings the eccentric villain to life in the Netflix series . Wapol was once the king of Drum Island, but he ruled with cruelty and greed. When the pirate Blackbeard attacked the kingdom, Wapol did the unthinkableโ€”he fled with his soldiers and left his people defenseless .

Even worse, he took almost every doctor from the island when he escaped, leaving the population without medical care . The citizens of Drum Island had no choice but to survive on their own, relying on the mysterious Dr. Kureha (Katey Sagal) who lived in the castle atop the freezing mountain.

Years later, Wapol wants his throne back. But he cannot do it alone. The season reveals that Wapol formed an alliance with the criminal organization Baroque Works . The mysterious leader known as Mr. 0 (later revealed as Crocodile, played by Joe Manganiello) provides Wapol with a Devil Fruit to help him reclaim his kingdom .

The Munch-Munch Fruit Gives Wapol Terrifying Powers

Wapol eats the Baku Baku no Mi, also known as the Munch-Munch Fruit, which grants him the ability to consume anything and merge it with his body . This Paramecia-type Devil Fruit turns him into a walking weapon factory. He can eat metal, weapons, and even people, then transform them into parts of his physical form.

The live-action series showcases this power in spectacular fashion during the final battle. Wapol uses his ability to create monstrous soldiers by fusing his followers with objects and weapons . His metal jaw transforms into different shapes, including a bird-like beak that adds to his intimidating appearance .

For actor Rob Colletti, bringing this character to life required intense preparation. He underwent nearly two months of stunt training and wore approximately 75 pounds of armor and prosthetics during filming . Each day started with almost three hours in the makeup chair before he could even step on set.

The Final Battle at Drum Castle

The confrontation between the Straw Hats and Wapol unfolds in episode 8, titled Deer and Loathing in Drum Kingdom . By this point, Nami (Emily Rudd) has recovered from the deadly Five-Day Disease thanks to Dr. Kureha and her assistant, a strange talking reindeer named Tony Tony Chopper.

Wapol arrives at the castle with his monster army, determined to eliminate anyone standing in his way. The Straw Hats split up to handle the threat. Zoro (Mackenyu) and Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson) stay in the town below to protect the villagers alongside Dalton, the captain of the civilian guard who now leads the people .

At the castle, Sanji (Taz Skylar) and Chopper take on Wapol’s two main henchmen. The battle gives Chopper his first real moment to shine. When Chopper transforms into his heavy point formโ€”growing to over seven feet tall with massive musclesโ€”the scene delivers exactly what manga fans hoped to see .

Meanwhile, Luffy (Iรฑaki Godoy) faces Wapol directly. Princess Vivi (Charithra Chandran) stands with him, delivering a passionate speech about protecting Drum Island before the fight begins.

Wapol Crosses the Line by Destroying Chopper’s Flag

The turning point comes when Wapol notices a Jolly Roger flag flying near the castle. This flag belongs to Chopper, given to him by his father figure, the late Dr. Hiriluk (Mark Harelik). Hiriluk was a quack doctor who accepted Chopper when no one else would, and the flag represents everything Chopper holds dear.

Wapol, in his cruelty, decides to destroy it.

As he prepares to fire a cannon at the flag, Luffy throws himself in front of the blast. The rubber captain takes a direct hit to protect Chopper’s most treasured possession . Miraculously, Luffy survivesโ€”his Devil Fruit powers likely absorbing some of the impactโ€”and the moment fuels his determination to end the fight.

Luffy and Sanji’s Combo Attack Ends Wapol’s Reign

The final sequence shows Luffy and Sanji working together to deliver the decisive blow. Sanji launches Luffy toward Wapol, and Luffy unleashes a powerful attack that sends the tin-plate king crashing through the castle window .

Wapol falls from the mountaintop castle, plummeting toward the snow-covered ground far below. The camera does not show his body after the fall, but the immediate aftermath confirms what happened. His monster soldiers instantly return to their normal forms, indicating that his power over them has vanished . The doctors he had transformed regain their humanity and rush to help the wounded villagers.

All signs point to Wapol dying from the fall. The show does not leave room for ambiguityโ€”his threat is eliminated, and Drum Island finally knows peace.

What Wapol’s Death Means for Drum Island

With Wapol gone, the people of Drum Island can finally rebuild without fear. Dalton emerges as the natural leader, though he insists his role is to protect rather than rule . Dr. Kureha continues her work, but she gains something perhaps more valuableโ€”hope.

In the episode’s most emotional moment, Kureha fires a chemical compound from a cannon into the sky above the island. Pink cherry blossoms rain down on the snow, fulfilling Dr. Hiriluk’s lifelong dream to cure the “sickness of the heart” that plagued Drum Kingdom . Chopper watches from the Going Merry as the sakura petals fall, tears streaming down his face as he realizes what his mentor’s partner has done.

The scene cements Chopper’s decision to join the Straw Hats. He officially becomes the crew’s doctor, packing his belongings including a mysterious container of small pills that he calls a “secret” . Manga readers recognize these as Rumble Balls, the drugs that allow Chopper to access additional transformation forms beyond his usual three.

The Connection Between Wapol and Baroque Works Explained

Wapol’s alliance with Baroque Works served a specific purpose in the larger story. The criminal organization, led by Mr. 0 (Crocodile), wanted to destabilize kingdoms across the Grand Line . By helping Wapol reclaim Drum Island, they hoped to gain a loyal ally who would support their plans for Alabasta.

The plan failed because Luffy and his crew refused to let another kingdom fall to tyranny. With Wapol defeated, Baroque Works loses a potential foothold in the region. But the organization’s true leader has much bigger ambitions.

The season finale reveals that Mr. 0 is actually Crocodile, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea . Joe Manganiello steps into the role, bringing menace and sophistication to the character. Standing beside him is Miss All Sunday, revealed as Nico Robin (Lera Abova), a woman with a bounty of 79 million berries who has been hunted since childhood.

Crocodile’s plan, Operation Utopia, aims to take over Alabasta by provoking a civil war . Princess Vivi, who traveled with the Straw Hats throughout season 2, now faces her greatest challengeโ€”saving her kingdom from destruction.

How Wapol’s Actor Prepared for the Role

Rob Colletti’s journey to becoming Wapol started with an audition where he had no idea what project he was even trying out for . The scenes provided had comedic elements, but Colletti sensed something darker underneath.

“When I initially auditioned for the role, I have to be honestโ€ฆI didn’t know what One Piece was,” Colletti shared in an interview . “The scenes I was given were written for comedy, but there was a menacing element to this person that was undeniable, so I tried to strike up a balance of both finding the humor and the horror behind the decisions he makes.”

After landing the role, Colletti dove deep into the source material. He studied the manga and anime to understand Wapol’s place in the larger story. But he also brought his own approach to the character.

“One thing about the way I work is, no matter how evil he came across in the story, it’s still my job to humanize him, while justifying and rooting his decisions in the reality of the world he inhabits,” Colletti explained. “Every villain thinks what they’re doing is ‘right.’ Wapol, regardless of how misled he might have been in his own justifications, is no different.”

The physical demands of the role tested his Broadway-honed discipline. Between the heavy armor, the prosthetics, and the action sequences, Colletti called it the hardest he has ever worked in his career .

Where to Watch One Piece Season 2

All eight episodes of One Piece season 2 are now streaming exclusively on Netflix . The season is available in multiple languages with subtitles and dubbing options for global audiences.

Viewers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia can access the series through their standard Netflix subscriptions. The show released simultaneously worldwide on March 10, 2026, allowing fans everywhere to watch at the same time.

For those in India, the season is available with both English and Hindi audio options, making it accessible to a wider audience across the subcontinent.

What Comes Next After Wapol’s Defeat

With Wapol eliminated and Chopper officially part of the crew, the Straw Hats set sail for Alabasta. The kingdom stands on the brink of civil war, and only Luffy and his friends can stop Crocodile’s scheme .

Season 3 will likely adapt the entire Alabasta arc, which is considered one of the most important storylines in the original manga . Unlike the first two seasons that jumped between multiple locations, the next chapter will focus on a single settingโ€”the desert kingdom where Vivi’s family has ruled for generations.

Production on season 3 reportedly began in late 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, where the first two seasons were also filmed . If the pattern holds, fans might see the next installment in late 2027 or early 2028.

The challenges ahead will test the Straw Hats like never before. Crocodile possesses a Logia-type Devil Fruit that lets him control sand, making him nearly untouchable to anyone who has not figured out his weakness. His Baroque Works organization includes powerful agents like Mr. 1 and Mr. 2 Bon Clay, who will push each crew member to their limits.

For now, the Straw Hats sail toward the horizon with a new friend, a clear mission, and the kind of reckless confidence that only Luffy can inspire. The Grand Line keeps getting more dangerous, but that has never stopped them before.
