The battle between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk is about to get more personal—and more complicated—when Daredevil: Born Again returns for its second season on March 24. Showrunner Dario Scardapane is now opening up about the deeper connection between the two characters, suggesting they might be more alike than either would admit.

Scardapane, who took over creative direction after the first season went through major changes, says the upcoming eight-episode season will finally let the story breathe the way it was meant to. After a first season he described as a “cobbled-together Frankenstein,” Season 2 will have a clearer focus on what happens when two men who refuse to back down go head-to-head for control of New York City.

Two Sides of the Same Brutal Coin

The showrunner points out that both Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk operate from a place of absolute conviction. Neither man is willing to compromise. Fisk believes he knows what’s best for the city and will crush anyone who gets in his way. Murdock believes in justice, but his methods often put him outside the law he claims to respect.

Scardapane told Entertainment Weekly that he has never written Kingpin as a straightforward villain, just as he has never written Daredevil as a traditional hero. This approach creates a moral gray area where the line between right and wrong gets blurry.

“I’ve never written Kingpin as a villain. And then it’s the rise of a hero. But I’ve never written Daredevil as a hero,” Scardapane explained in a recent interview.

Executive producer Sana Amanat expanded on this idea, noting that the real story is about what happens when the villain becomes part of the system and controls it from the inside. In Season 2, Mayor Fisk uses his political power to hunt down vigilantes, and Daredevil finds himself fighting not just a crime boss but the entire city government.

The Anti-Vigilante Task Force Changes Everything

The biggest threat in Season 2 is Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF) . These agents patrol New York streets with little oversight, pulling people from their homes and businesses without due process. They operate in unmarked black vans and wear uniforms that make them hard to identify.

Scardapane acknowledged that as they were editing the season, they noticed how closely the show’s events mirrored real-world situations. “As we got into post, things got into an art-imitates-life place,” he said.

But the showrunner clarified that many of these scenes were inspired by historical events, not current politics. He pointed to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 as one reference point. Another scene where a woman gets taken from a bodega pays tribute to Ryan Coogler’s film Fruitvale Station, which depicted real police brutality.

“If you go back to the historical rise of autocrats, whether it’s Nero, whether it’s Pinochet, whether it’s Franco, they follow a script,” Scardapane told Entertainment Weekly.

Where the Story Picks Up

Season 2 starts six months after the events of the first season finale. When last we saw Matt Murdock, he had just taken a bullet meant for Fisk and watched his apartment explode with Frank Castle by his side. Fisk had murdered Police Commissioner Gallo in front of his own task force and established an underground prison holding captured vigilantes.

The new season jumps straight into the resistance. Scardapane told Times Now that they wanted to hit the ground running, showing Daredevil actively messing with Fisk’s operations from the shadows while trying to tear down the Kingpin’s corrupt empire.

“We’d left Daredevil on the back foot. Kingpin had taken over the city. He basically stated we need an army. Then six months later, we’re kind of jumping in what that looks like,” Scardapane said.

Jessica Jones Returns to Help

One of the biggest additions to Season 2 is the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. The fan-favorite character from the Netflix era makes her official MCU debut, joining the fight against Fisk’s forces.

Scardapane hinted that Jones’ appearance has been planned since the first season. “The best thing I can say is it was something we’ve had in our plans since season one. This is a character that we love,” he shared.

The showrunner also teased where viewers might find Jones when the season begins. “We wanted to investigate what does it look like when that character is being hunted. And we also were very, very interested in what that character is like seven years later,” he explained.

The Season 2 trailer showed Jessica finding a battered Matt Murdock and dryly telling him, “I hope you can walk, because I’m not carrying you” before the two team up to take on Fisk’s forces.

What to Expect When the Show Returns

The cast for Season 2 includes returning stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, and Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk. Michael Gandolfini also returns as Daniel Blake, Fisk’s press aide.

All eight episodes of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will be available for streaming on March 24, 2026. Viewers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia can watch on Disney+. Indian audiences will find the series on JioHotstar.

The first season, along with the original three seasons of Daredevil from Netflix and The Defenders crossover series, remains available on Disney+ for anyone who wants to catch up before the new episodes drop.
