With Euphoria Season 3 arriving on April 12, 2026, fans tuning in have noticed a major missing face. Barbie Ferreira, who played the fan-favorite character Kat Hernandez, is not coming back. The actress left the show after Season 2, and she is now speaking openly about why walking away from one of television’s biggest hits was the right choice for her career and happiness.
Ferreira, now 29, has been busy promoting two new films—the horror movie Faces of Death and the romantic comedy Mile End Kicks. During these interviews, she gave a clear and honest look at her decision to leave the HBO drama that made her a household name.
‘It Just Felt Like the Character Wasn’t Kat Anymore’
Ferreira explained that her connection to the role started to fade during the show’s second season. She told Collider in an interview published on April 10, 2026, that the character she originally loved felt different.
“With Season 2, it just felt like the character wasn’t Kat anymore,” Ferreira said. “I think everyone knew that the end of the story was there because we didn’t have anything else to put. I mean, obviously there could have been, but it just wasn’t happening.”
The actress, who first gained attention for her work in Unpregnant and Nope, felt her role was becoming smaller and less meaningful. What started as a powerful storyline about body confidence and self-discovery in Season 1 turned into something that no longer excited her.
Choosing Creative Growth Over a Hit Show
For Ferreira, acting is about more than fame or being on a popular series. She made it clear that being on the biggest TV show on HBO was not enough to keep her if she felt stuck.
“I felt like I wanted to do more things,” she told Collider. “I didn’t care if it was like the biggest TV show on HBO. And I went straight into doing like $1 million budget indies. It’s just more about expressing myself. I felt like I wasn’t showing my potential as the actress that I know that I am.”
In another interview with Deadline, she shared a similar message. She said she would have stayed with Euphoria forever if the show helped her grow as an actor. But that stopped happening.
“It wasn’t really letting me show my range,” Ferreira explained. “In fact, it was kind of diminishing as time went on. What makes me happy is acting and growing my career.”
“So, it just felt like a very personal decision where I, really deep down, don’t care if what I’m doing is the biggest show of all time, as long as I’m creatively fulfilled. It’s truly all that I care about.” – Barbie Ferreira to Deadline
No Bad Blood, Just a Mutual Decision
Rumors have floated around for years suggesting Ferreira left Euphoria because of conflicts with show creator Sam Levinson. She has repeatedly shut down those claims.
She told Collider that her exit was a “mutual decision” between her and the show’s team. Back in 2023, she spoke on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast about how she got pulled into drama she never asked for.
“I’m of the mindset that if it doesn’t exist, I’m not going to address it because then I’m adding fuel to it,” she said at the time.
Her recent comments focus only on her own needs as an artist, not on blaming anyone.
Staying in Touch With the Cast
Even though she is no longer on the show, Ferreira still has love for her former co-stars. She told Parade that while the old cast group chat is not very active—because everyone is “bad with their phones”—the friendships remain.
She shared that Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, and Sydney Sweeney all came to support her during her Broadway run in Cult of Love.
“I saw Hunter the other day, I saw Maude the other day, Sydney came to see my play,” Ferreira said. “Whenever we’re in town, we always try to see each other.”
She also told Just Jared that she had not seen any Euphoria Season 3 footage until the trailers came out. She said, “They look amazing. I’m excited to see what the girls are gonna do.”
What Barbie Ferreira Has Done Since Leaving Euphoria
Ferreira did not take a break after leaving the show. She jumped straight into new projects that gave her the creative freedom she wanted.
Her horror film Faces of Death arrived in theaters on April 10, 2026. The movie also stars Charli XCX and Dacre Montgomery. Ferreira plays a content moderator who finds violent videos online and gets pulled into a dark mystery. Critics have praised her leading performance in the film.
Her indie romantic comedy Mile End Kicks follows on April 17, 2026. Ferreira plays a music critic named Grace. She also served as an executive producer on the project.
Between these two films, she also acted in Bob Trevino Likes It and House of Spoils. She recently launched a clothing collection with lifestyle brand For Your Soul as well.
