In a decision that brings a crime saga to an abrupt end, the Starz network has canceled its original drama series BMF. The show, which was inspired by the true story of the Black Mafia Family, will not return for a fifth season, making its fourth season finale the unexpected series finale. The cancellation follows comments from the network’s CEO about the show’s performance and a strategic shift toward developing new series.

The Official Cancellation News

Starz made the decision to end BMF after four seasons. The news was confirmed in late October 2025, roughly two months after the show’s fourth season concluded airing in mid-August. The series, which debuted in 2021, was produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s G-Unit Film and Television and Lionsgate Television.

While no single official reason was given for the cancellation, a key factor was highlighted by Starz president and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch. In a quarterly earnings call, he noted that the show’s fourth season had “underperformed.” This underperformance was significant enough to cause “modest sequential declines” in the network’s online subscriber numbers and revenue.

Behind the Scenes and Business Reasons

Beyond the ratings, the cancellation aligns with a broader content strategy outlined by the network’s leadership. Earlier in the year, Hirsch explained plans to manage rising costs by developing new shows rather than sustaining existing ones as they become more expensive.

“When seasons go from one to two to three to four, three to four is where the cost really pops because most of the actors get bigger raises, and you have to really manage that. So, you have to have in your portfolio of development shows that can actually replace shows as they get into later seasons,” Hirsch stated.

This business model suggests that the financial demands of a fifth season of BMF did not align with the viewership it was attracting. There were also reported tensions behind the scenes, including a public feud between executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and the real-life Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory. However, sources indicate this conflict was not the reason for the cancellation, though it did create anxiety on set.

How Season 4 Ended as a Series Finale

The fourth season of BMF, which concluded on August 15, 2025, ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving several storylines unresolved. The finale, titled “Dreams Deferred,” saw the Flenory brothers’ relationship at a breaking point. Terry Flenory decided to leave Detroit to run the organization’s West Coast division in Los Angeles, while Big Meech remained in Atlanta.

The season’s major threats culminated in a violent shootout. The deranged Lamar Silas and Detective Bryant teamed up, leading to the death of former BMF member B-Mickie, who was shot by Bryant. In the final moments of the episode, Big Meech was arrested by Detective Bryant outside his nightclub after a fatal fight.

Showrunner Heather Zuhlke had previously expressed hope for a fifth season to continue the story, telling Variety, “We want to finish what the creator started.” She also explained the creative direction, noting, “In the real story, the brothers didnโ€™t speak for years before they were arrested. Itโ€™s important to us to show that evolution.”

The Future of the BMF Story

Although the television series has ended, the story of the Black Mafia Family may continue in other forms. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson had previously confirmed plans to expand BMF into a larger universe, dubbed “BMF Immortal.” While no new spinoff series have been officially announced, sources indicate that such projects remain in development at Starz.

The companion docuseries, The BMF Documentary: Blowing Money Fast, has been renewed for a second season and will feature an exclusive interview with Terry Flenory. Jackson continues his extensive production relationship with Starz through the ongoing Power franchise and the new British boxing drama Fightland.
