Bill Skarsgard has played a demonic clown and a vampire. Now, he is playing a very different kind of monster—a real-life hostage taker. His critically praised film Dead Man’s Wire just arrived on Netflix on May 28, 2026. The movie also stars Colman Domingo and Al Pacino.
The film first came out in theaters on January 9, 2026 in the United States. It also played in the UK and Netherlands starting in March. After a successful run in cinemas, the movie is now available for millions of subscribers to watch at home.
The Movie Tells a Wild True Story From 1977
Dead Man’s Wire is based on a real event that happened in Indianapolis on February 8, 1977. Bill Skarsgard plays Tony Kiritsis, a former real estate developer. He believed that a mortgage banker named Richard Hall tricked him out of a property deal. Kiritsis lost a lot of money because of it.
One morning, Kiritsis walked into Hall’s office with a sawed-off shotgun. He tied a wire from the gun’s trigger to Hall’s neck. The wire was set up so that if anyone tried to stop Kiritsis, the gun would fire and kill Hall. This setup was called a “dead man’s wire.” The standoff lasted for 63 hours. News cameras broadcast the whole thing live across the country.
During the hostage crisis, Kiritsis made phone calls to radio stations and police. He demanded $5 million and a personal apology. Strangely, many regular people started to support him. They saw him as someone fighting back against a system that cheats the little guy.
Bill Skarsgard Became Tony Kiritsis Without Heavy Makeup
For once, Bill Skarsgard does not need prosthetics to disappear into a role. In It and Nosferatu, heavy makeup hid his face. For this movie, he just grew a mustache and changed his haircut. But he still used the same acting method.
Skarsgard explained that he started by listening to real audio recordings of Kiritsis from 1977. There are many tapes of the actual phone calls made during the standoff. Skarsgard listened to these to find the character’s voice and rhythm.
“In the case of Dead Man’s Wire, the source material was great. My in to the character was just researching him as much as I could and listening to his voice and how he speaks. There was so much footage of the real event,” Skarsgard told CinemaBlend.
He also found the real Tony to be unexpectedly funny. During an interview with ComingSoon, Skarsgard talked about how the comedy came naturally. He remembered one detail from the real event where Kiritsis asked for a glass of milk with ice. Skarsgard thought it sounded “psychotic” and kept it in the movie.
“I found the real Tony quite funny. The first scene we did, I just found him funny. A lot of it was very spontaneous,” Skarsgard said. He later received an email from a viewer who said, “I also drink milk with ice.” Skarsgard laughed and said, “That made me smile.”
The Supporting Cast Is Full of Big Names
Colman Domingo plays a local radio DJ who becomes the main negotiator between Kiritsis and the police. His character talks to Kiritsis live on air during the standoff. Al Pacino also appears in the film, adding to the star power.
Dacre Montgomery, known for Stranger Things, plays the hostage Richard Hall. Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) and Myha’la (Industry) also have roles in the movie.
The film is directed by Gus Van Sant. He is famous for movies like Good Will Hunting and Milk. This is his return to crime drama after several years.
Critics Love the Film and Fans Are Watching
Dead Man’s Wire has a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 163 critic reviews. Audience scores are also strong at 77%. Critics praise Skarsgard’s performance as the best of his career. They also note how the film balances tense drama with dark humor.
The movie first premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2025. It also played at the Toronto International Film Festival. Since landing on Netflix, social media has been full of reactions. Viewers are shocked that the story is real.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Just watched Dead Man’s Wire on Netflix. Bill Skarsgard is insane in this. I can’t believe this actually happened.” Another posted, “Colman Domingo is in everything lately and he is always great. The radio scenes in Dead Man’s Wire are so tense.”
