On June 11, 2026, the first teaser trailer for BBC‘s hit comedy-drama Ludwig’s second season came out, confirming that David Mitchell‘s socially awkward puzzle maker will return to screens this summer. The 60-second teaser gives viewers a quick look at John “Ludwig” Taylor in his new official role, while still hunting for his missing twin brother.
The Teaser: From ‘Puzzle Consultant’ to a Real Job
The teaser opens with John introducing himself in a new capacity. “Hello, I’m John Taylor, puzzle consultant,” he says to a room of police officers. Dipo Ola‘s DI Russell Carter quickly corrects him. “You’re a crime scene consultant,” Carter says. John pauses and admits, “That does sound more like an actual job.”
The short trailer also includes quick glimpses of Anna Maxwell Martin returning as Lucy, John’s sister-in-law, who remains determined to find her missing husband James. The clips maintain the show’s signature mix of dry humor and cosy mystery vibes that made season one a massive hit.
Season 2 Plot: One Masquerade Ends, Another Begins
Season one ended with John no longer needing to pretend to be his detective twin brother. The official synopsis for season two confirms that John is now officially employed as a Crime Scene Consultant for the Cambridge Police Authority, working alongside DCI Russell Carter.
But the core mystery remains unsolved. James is still missing. Now that John is a government employee, he is forbidden from using police resources to look for his brother. The synopsis makes it clear that John will not stop, and neither will Lucy. “One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun,” the logline reads.
New Cast Members Join the Team
Season two brings in some fresh faces while keeping the beloved core cast. Returning are Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler, and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville.
Joining them as series regulars are Mark Bonnar (Dept. Q, Guilt) as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, and Sian Clifford (Fleabag) as local MP Joanne Kemper. Ben Ashenden (Black Mirror) plays DC Ethan Cole and Rumi Sutton (After the Flood) plays DC Caitlin Sullivan.
Departures and Behind-the-Scenes Details
Two cast members from season one will not return. Gerran Howell and Izuka Hoyle are not expected to appear in the new episodes. The series remains written by Mark Brotherhood, with George Kane directing episodes 1-3 and Stella Corradi directing episodes 4-6.
Ludwig is a Big Talk Studios production in association with That Mitchell and Webb Company, co-produced with BritBox and ZDF. The show has already been sold to 85 international markets.
Release Date and Where to Watch
Ludwig season 2 will air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK this summer. An exact premiere date has not yet been announced. For viewers in North America, the series will be available on BritBox. The first season is currently streaming on BBC iPlayer and BritBox.
