PBS has officially renewed Maigret for a second season, and filming is already happening in Budapest. The show, which gives a modern take on Georges Simenon’s famous Parisian detective, is making some big shifts. The new episodes will bring in fresh faces, change up the team dynamics, and dig deeper into darker mysteries. If you enjoyed the first season, get ready for a very different kind of crime fight.
New Boss Arrives to Challenge Maigret’s Growing Fame
The biggest shift in Maigret Season 2 is the arrival of Xavier Guichard, the Director of Police. Played by Nathaniel Parker (known for The Inspector Lynley Mysteries), this character is not just a boss but a mentor. Guichard has noticed Jules Maigret’s rising fame in Paris and decides it is time to take him down a peg. This creates a new layer of tension inside the police department. Parker’s role adds a strong authority figure who questions everything the young detective does, making the job harder for Maigret.
Adapting Three Classic Novels Instead of One
Unlike the first season which only touched the surface, Maigret Season 2 will pull stories from three of Simenon’s most famous books. The team is adapting The Yellow Dog (1931), The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien (1931), and Maigret’s Revolver (1952). This means viewers will get a heavier dose of twisted murder cases. The stories push the detective to his limits, showing him handle crimes that are more cruel and heart-breaking than before. The line between guilt and innocence becomes very unclear in these plots.
Big Changes Inside Maigret’s Core Team
The team at La Brigade Criminelle is getting a serious shake-up. Because of Guichard’s arrival, Maigret loses one of his trusted colleagues. To make things worse, another officer is replaced by George Bonfils, a former Internal Affairs officer played by Alex Bhat (Outlander). Bonfils does not try to fit in, and he immediately becomes unpopular with the rest of the group. This internal drama creates a tense workplace obstacle for Maigret. He has to solve difficult crimes while dealing with an office spy who reports to the new boss.
“I think we deserve to see more of where, how the Maigrets have come to be who they are… There’s just such great chemistry, and they’re such amazing characters.” – Benjamin Wainwright (Jules Maigret) on the character-driven focus of Season 2.
A Stronger Focus on Character Backstories
While the first season set up the team, Maigret Season 2 plans to slow down and look at the people behind the badges. Benjamin Wainwright shared that the new season will explore how the detectives became who they are. The show will spend time on figures like Janvier, Lapointe, and Torrence. This change is a direct response to the chemistry fans loved in the freshman run. Instead of just rushing from crime to crime, the series will build the world of the characters, making the audience care more about what happens to them personally.
Expanding Maigret’s Unique Psychological Style
Maigret has always been different from other detectives because he focuses on the criminal more than the victim. Maigret Season 2 will expand on this unusual method. Most crime shows ask “who did it,” but Maigret asks “why did they do it.” He feels a connection to the people he arrests because he grew up on the same streets. The new season will show him using this empathy to solve darker cases in modern Paris. He tries to find his own form of justice, often feeling sorry for the suspects while still catching them.
Returning Cast and Production Details
The main cast is coming back for the new episodes. Benjamin Wainwright returns as the lead detective, with Stefanie Martini as his wife, Louise Maigret. The loyal team, known as “Les Maigrets,” including Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok, and Reda Elazouar, will also return. Rob Kazinsky is back as Inspector Justin Cavre. The show is a co-production between Playground and MASTERPIECE PBS. Patrick Harbinson returns as the showrunner, and filming began in April 2026 in Budapest.
