The end is almost here for the Fraser family. Outlander Season 8 Episode 9, titled ‘Pharos,’ aired on Starz on May 8, 2026. This is the 100th episode of the whole series and the second-to-last chapter ever. The drama did not hold back, delivering a rescue mission, a shocking reveal about a secret time traveler, and a heavy conversation about Jamie’s possible death.
The episode focused on Lord John Grey (David Berry) being held captive. Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), and William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart) had to team up for a risky rescue. As the American Revolutionary War gets closer to their door, the characters spent this episode fixing broken friendships and facing hard truths about history and fate.

Jamie and William Ride Out for Lord John Grey
The trouble started when Lord John Grey went missing. He was tricked and captured by Captain Richardson. Richardson wanted to blackmail John to manipulate John’s brother, Hal, a powerful man in the British government, about war funding.
Back at the Grey estate, Amaranthus called William and the Frasers for help. Once William realized his father was in danger, he didn’t hesitate. He joined Jamie to find Percy Beauchamp, the man who betrayed John. The search got physically intense. Jamie and William brutally beat Percy to get answers about where John was being held.
Percy finally gave them John’s signet ring. Inside the ring was the engraved word ‘Pharos.’ Luckily, William remembered his Latin lessons. He knew ‘Pharos’ meant ‘Lighthouse.’ This clue led the rescue party straight to a boathouse near a lighthouse on Tybee Island.
When they arrived, Claire distracted Richardson while Jamie and William sneaked in. They killed Richardson’s guards and freed John. It was a huge emotional moment when William hugged Lord John, relieved to have saved the man who raised him.

Claire Meets a Fellow Time Traveler with Dangerous Plans
After the rescue, Claire stayed behind to guard Captain Richardson while Jamie got the boat. During this time, Richardson tried to convince Claire to let him go. He told her he was trying to stop slavery in America before it got worse. He said if the British won the war, they might end slavery sooner, preventing the Civil War.
That is when Claire realized the truth: Richardson is also a time traveler. He traveled back to change the past.
“Claire reveals that she, too, tried to change the course of history during Culloden but even time travelers cannot reverse time.”
Claire warned him that history does not bend easily. Still, she felt bad for him and untied his ropes, letting him walk free. But Lord John Grey was not ready to forgive. As Richardson walked away toward his boat, John grabbed a gun and shot him dead. For John, it was simple revenge for the kidnapping and emotional torture Richardson put him through.

Jamie and Lord John Fix Their Broken Friendship
The rescue fixed the physical danger, but the emotional wounds between Jamie and John were still open. For a long time, Jamie was angry at John for marrying Claire when everyone thought Jamie was dead.
Back in Savannah, the two men finally sat down for a real talk. Jamie admitted his anger came from jealousy and pride, not just logic. He finally apologized properly. John accepted, and the two old friends agreed to move past the bad blood. To show they were good again, they sat down to play a game of chess, just like they used to in the old days.
David Berry, who plays Lord John, explained that this scene was very carefully prepared. He told TV Insider that the script changed several times to make sure the argument felt fair.
“There were a lot of opinions and uncertainty about how we were going to do it. It was about making it an equal conflict so that both men had to meet each other halfway. It wasn’t just Jamie apologizing. John had to do some work to forgive and to be forgiven.”
Claire Tells William He Is Lucky to Have Two Fathers
Back at the Grey home, William was still struggling with his feelings. He was angry at Jamie for leaving him as a child and confused about loyalty. Claire sat down with him for a gentle but honest talk.
She explained that William is not alone in having a complicated family. Claire pointed out that she grew up with uncles, that Brianna had two fathers (Frank and Jamie), and that Ian also had multiple parental figures. She told William that having two fathers—Jamie by blood and John by choice—is not a curse. It means he was loved by more people. This conversation helped William accept his situation.

The Frasers finally returned to Fraser’s Ridge. The big news at home was that Brianna (Sophie Skelton) successfully gave birth. She named her new son David ‘Davy’ Fraser MacKenzie.
But the joy was mixed with heavy sadness. Jamie had to tell Brianna the truth. He showed her the history book from the future written by Frank Randall. The book says Jamie dies at the Battle of King’s Mountain. Brianna begged her father not to go, but she knew it was useless. Jamie believes he must fight to protect his family and the Ridge.
Just as the episode ended, Benjamin Cleveland and his men arrived. They told the family the battle will start in just two days. Claire stood there, realizing that as a time traveler, she could save people with medicine, but she could not change the fixed points of history. She must watch her husband walk toward what might be his death.
