The final season of The Boys brings more than just bloody battles and dark laughs. For Erin Moriarty, the actress playing Annie January (Starlight), this season hits very close to home. Her character faces a corrupt system and a broken identity. Off-screen, Moriarty battled a serious health issue while dealing with the pressure of being known as a real-life superhero.

Moriarty recently shared deep thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter about how her life started to mirror her character’s journey in strange ways. She explained that as Annie grew from a naive new hero into a tired fighter, Moriarty also felt the weight of public expectation growing on her.

The Meta Connection Between Actress and Hero

Moriarty pointed out a strange “meta element” to playing Starlight. When Annie first joined The Seven, strangers on the street started shouting her name. At the same time, Moriarty noticed people began recognizing her as “Starlight” in real life.

She told The Hollywood Reporter:

“There’s this very meta element to Starlight. When she joined the Seven, people on the street suddenly called out her name. Simultaneously, I was starting to be known as Starlight too. A lot of what Annie has gone through has weirdly paralleled my own life. This character is known for her purity, and as I’ve gotten older and grown with the character, people have also expected me to retain that initial pure element to Annie. So we have both matured over time.”

This overlap between fiction and reality created a unique pressure for the actress. Just as fans expect Annie to always do the right thing, audiences expected Moriarty to stay the same person they first saw in 2019.

Battling Graves’ Disease During Final Season

The final season of The Boys was especially hard for Erin Moriarty. She was diagnosed with Graves’ disease in June 2025. The autoimmune condition causes extreme fatigue, nausea, and other symptoms. She was already six months into filming when she got the news.

The timing could not have been worse. Moriarty admitted she felt “offline” for most of the shoot. She said:

“It did lead to me not being as present for Annie during this final season as I would’ve hoped, and that was super painful for me. It was like I was offline for the first six to seven episodes, and then I came back online. I finally felt present at the very end of season five.”

The actress felt she was failing both her character and the audience. She worried that her health problems stopped her from giving Annie the ending she deserved.

Season 5 Story: The Starlighter Movement Falls Apart

Season 5 of The Boys (streaming now on Prime Video) shows Annie at her lowest point. She leads the Starlighter Movement, a resistance against Homelander (Antony Starr). But the cost has been high. Many followers have died. The pressure has broken her down mentally and emotionally.

Annie tries to leak the Flight 37 footage at a Vought shareholder meeting. This video shows Homelander letting a plane crash. But Vought uses a smart trick. They claim the footage is AI-generated. The move works. The public does not believe the truth.

Moriarty found this plot point very smart. She called it “very zeitgeist-y” because fake AI content is a real problem today.

A Father’s Return Brings Clarity

In the final season, Annie leaves her friends to find her estranged father, Rick (Tim Daly). Her mother, Donna (Ann Cusack), always said Rick left because of money problems. But Annie learns the truth. Her father left because he refused to lie about her powers coming from Compound V.

Rick confirms that Donna’s lies pushed him away. He tells Annie he watched her career from a distance and is proud of her. This meeting gives Annie the push she needs to find herself again.

Moriarty explained:

“He really galvanizes her and catalyzes her to find herself and her heroism for the remainder of the season.”

The Finale Promise: Heartbreaking but Satisfying

The series finale of The Boys will air on May 20, 2026. Moriarty has read the script. She did not hold back when describing what fans should expect.

“It’s a heartbreaking episode. It’s not overtly cynical. When I read the finale as a script, it was my favorite episode this season, as it should be. I think the audience is going to be so immensely satisfied by the finale. I never like to give a resolute prediction like that, and I never have, but I’m saying it now because I have so much excitement and confidence in it.”

She warns viewers not to get too comfortable. No character is safe in this final run. The show is known for shocking deaths and dark turns. The finale will likely follow that same brutal rulebook.

Vaping and Mental Exhaustion: Small Human Moments

This season, Annie picks up a new habit: vaping. It is a small detail, but it means a lot. Moriarty asked showrunner Eric Kripke to add it. She wanted to show Annie’s stress in a real, human way.

The actress feels Annie has reached a point where she might be suicidal. Annie believes the only way to redeem herself is to die for the people lost in her movement.

Moriarty explained:

“There have been so many casualties as a result of this Starlighter Movement that she’s at the head of, and she’s at her most stressful breaking point. I even deem her as being suicidal. She sees that the only redemptive way for her to become a hero is to sacrifice herself.”

This dark mindset adds a heavy layer to the final episodes.

Annie’s Growth From Naive Believer to Broken Leader

Looking back at her time on The Boys, Erin Moriarty sees a clear path of growth for Annie. In Season 1, Annie believed joining The Seven would let her help people. She quickly learned the truth. The Supes are corrupt. Vought controls everything. Her own mother lied about her powers coming from God.

Over five seasons, Annie moved from a shocked newcomer to a confident fighter. Then she became a broken leader carrying the weight of dead followers.

Moriarty shared her approach to playing the character:

“If I was able to say that Annie is good merely by trying to do good in every situation that she enters, then that meant that I’d done my best.”

She stopped questioning if she did right by Annie. That confidence helped her push through the hard days of filming while sick.
