The British psychological thriller Unchosen landed on Netflix on April 21, 2026, and quickly climbed the streamer’s top 10 charts. The six-episode limited series, created by Julie Gearey, follows a married couple trapped inside a repressive Christian cult called the Fellowship. But the finale left viewers with one major question: Where is Adam?
In the final moments, viewers see a one-year time jump. The villain, Sam (Fra Fee) , has taken over as the leader of the cult. He walks through the hall with a smile. But Asa Butterfield’s character, Adam, is nowhere to be seen. Here is a breakdown of his fate, the blackmail that silenced him, and what the cast says about his future.

The Final Showdown and the Video That Changed Everything
The ending sets up a tense face-off. After Rosie (Molly Windsor) escapes to safety with her daughter Grace, Adam tracks down Sam. He holds a gun to Sam’s head. It looks like Adam might finally stop the man who destroyed his family and killed his brother, Isaac.
However, Sam does not beg for his life. He stays calm. He pulls out a phone and shows Adam a video. The footage shows a sexual act between Adam and Sam that happened earlier in the series. This recording is Sam’s insurance policy.
Sam tells Adam to put the gun down and call the police on him instead. But if Adam makes that call, Sam will release the video. For Adam, a man who has spent his entire life hiding his true sexuality from his religious community, this threat is worse than death. It would disgrace him completely within the Fellowship, the only world he has ever known.

Where is Adam in the Final Scene?
The series finale jumps forward one full year. Rosie and Grace are living safely with Mrs. Phillips, the former leader’s wife who left the cult. Meanwhile, Sam stands at the front of the church. He speaks to the congregation as the new leader.
There is no sign of Adam.
The show does not explicitly show Adam being killed or leaving. However, the context of the blackmail video suggests he is trapped. Because Sam has the video, Adam cannot expose Sam’s crimes (murder and manipulation) without destroying his own reputation. Asa Butterfield, who plays Adam, explained that his character is deeply ingrained in the cult’s lifestyle and may not have the strength to leave, unlike Rosie.
“It’s so deeply ingrained in him, this life and this world. Unlike Rosie, who needs the change and who’s seen the chance to change, I don’t think Adam’s really opened his eyes to that yet.” — Asa Butterfield
Because Sam holds all the power, it is likely that Adam is either still living in the Fellowship under Sam’s control, or he has been cast out—unable to return to his family and unable to stay in the only home he knows.

Adam’s Internal Struggle Throughout the Series
To understand the ending, viewers must look at Adam’s journey. At the start of the series, Adam is an elder in the Fellowship. He is strict and loyal. But the show hints that he is hiding a major secret: his attraction to men.
Rosie reveals to Adam that she slept with Sam. But Adam cannot get angry because he slept with Sam too. Sam used Adam’s confusion and guilt to manipulate him. Butterfield called his character a “sad story” because of the self-hatred Adam feels due to his faith and his natural feelings.

By the end of the show, Adam finally does the right thing. He helps Rosie and Grace escape. He fights Sam to buy them time. But the show makes it clear that doing one good thing does not erase the years of abuse or the blackmail video that now controls him.
Rosie and Grace Find Safety
While Adam’s fate remains a mystery, Rosie (Molly Windsor) and Grace do get a happy ending. After Sam lets them go in the woods, Rosie takes Grace to the home of Mrs. Phillips (Siobhan Finneran) . Earlier in the season, Mrs. Phillips left her husband after discovering he lied about their son. Because she is no longer part of the cult, her home is a safe place for Rosie and Grace.

Molly Windsor said that while Rosie is safe, a hard road is still ahead. She will have to learn how to live in normal society and trust people again after the trauma of the cult and Sam’s violence.

Sam Takes Control of the Fellowship
The final twist shows Sam succeeding. He set out to destroy the Fellowship from the inside, and he did. The old leader, Mr. Phillips (Christopher Eccleston), is gone. The congregation looks to Sam for guidance. Fra Fee, who plays Sam, believes his character thinks he found peace. However, the actor notes that Sam replaced the need for real love with the admiration of his followers, which is not true happiness.
Showrunner Julie Gearey explained that the ending is meant to be unsettling. The system of the cult is still there; only the face at the top has changed.
