The medical drama Watson has finished its run on CBS. The Season 2 finale, which aired on Sunday, May 3, 2026, also serves as the series finale after the network canceled the show. The episode, titled The Cobalt Fissure, brings back Sherlock Holmes in the flesh, but he does not remember his past with Dr. John Watson.

The hour-long episode packs in a murder investigation, a brain tumor surgery, and the return of a classic villain. Morris Chestnut stars as Watson, who must save his old friend while fighting for his own life. The show ends with a trip to the famous 221B Baker Street address, leaving fans with questions about what is real.

CBS Cancels Show Days Before Finale Airs

CBS decided not to renew Watson for a third season. The network announced the cancellation in late March 2026, just one week before the finale. Morris Chestnut, who plays the lead role, shared a video on Instagram after the news broke. He thanked the crew and the fans who watched each week.

โ€œYes, itโ€™s disappointing, but thatโ€™s the way the show is. You have to take the good with the bad,โ€ Chestnut said in his message. The show saw a drop in viewers during its second season, going down by 44 percent to about 2.86 million people on average.

The writers did not know the show would end when they wrote Episode 20. Craig Sweeny, the creator, said they treated it mostly as a season finale. They added a short extra scene that could work as a possible future for the characters. No other streaming service like Netflix or Amazon has shown interest in picking up the show for more episodes.

Real Sherlock Holmes Shows Up With Memory Loss

For most of Season 2, Watson saw a version of Sherlock Holmes only he could see. These were hallucinations caused by a brain tumor. But in the finale, the real Holmes appears at the Holmes Clinic in Pittsburgh. He is played by Robert Carlyle, and he does not know who he is.

Holmes arrives with memory loss, dehydration, low blood pressure, and high liver enzymes. Watson leaves his own surgery prep in Baltimore to return and help his friend. The team runs many tests but cannot figure out the cause at first. Holmes slowly starts to remember a case from years ago. He and Watson chased a bad guy for three days to a weapons testing site. The place had radiation, and both men got sick from it.

Watson figures out that the radiation caused his brain tumor. For Holmes, it changed his genes. Holmes jokes that he is now a mutant. Once the team finds the right treatment, Holmes starts to get better. He tells Watson, โ€œThere were two men, Holmes and Watson, Watson and Holmes, and they did the most extraordinary things.โ€

Watson Faces His Own Deadly Brain Tumor

While Watson saves Holmes, his own health gets worse. His brain tumor causes seizures that get more dangerous over time. His doctor warns him that without surgery right away, he will lose his memory and his sense of self. But Watson keeps pushing to solve the mystery of Holmesโ€™s illness first.

At one point, Watson has a seizure that will not stop. The team puts him on a ventilator and gives him drugs that put him in a coma-like state. His colleagues visit him one by one. Ingrid (Eve Harlow), who plays a doctor with antisocial personality disorder, gets emotional. She tells him, โ€œYou gave me a place in this awful, beautiful world. And if I have to visit you in a long-term care facility every day forever, Iโ€™ll do it.โ€

Mary Morstan (Rochelle Aytes), Watsonโ€™s ex-wife, also speaks to him. She says her whole world changed the day she met him. Watson wakes up after hearing her voice. He remembers a day he walked in on her kissing her new boyfriend. He tells her he came to say โ€œI love you.โ€ He describes a picture in his head of the two of them living on Baker Street in London, having breakfast without needing to talk.

Sebastian Moran Arrives as the New Villain

The finale brings in Sebastian Moran, a villain from the original Sherlock Holmes books. Eddie Izzard plays the character, who works for Moriarty. Moran shoots and kills a nurse outside the hospital just to get Watsonโ€™s attention. He has been keeping Holmes locked up and using him for his own plans. Now that Holmes is sick, Moran needs him fixed so he can be useful again.

Moran threatens to kill Mary if Watson calls the police. Shinwell (Ritchie Coster), who has a past with these kinds of criminals, tracks Moran down. He wants revenge because he believes Moran killed people who took care of him years ago. In the end, Shinwell does not kill Moran. He knocks out four of his teeth to get information, then calls the police to arrest him.

Final Scene Takes Watson Back to Baker Street

The episode does not show whether Watson survives his surgery. The title card rises as the operation begins. But then the show adds one more scene. Viewers see 221B Baker Street in London, the famous address from the books. Rain falls on the street, and Watson walks up to check the mail. Mary opens the front door and greets him, saying he is home early. He follows her inside.

Craig Sweeny, the creator, said this scene can mean different things to different people. It could be a fantasy Watson sees on the operating table in his last moments. Or it could show that he lived and got the happy ending he wanted. Sweeny said he has his own idea but wants the audience to decide for themselves.

What Happens to the Other Doctors at the Clinic

The finale also ties up stories for the other doctors. Sasha (Inga Schlingmann) finds out that a man named Beck tricked her about her birth mother. She decides to track down her real mother. She breaks up with her boyfriend Stephens because she says she does not know who she is anymore.

Adam (Peter Mark Kendall) just became a father to triplets. He asks his twin brother Stephens to promise to call him if he ever feels like giving up on life. Stephens agrees and says he can now see a future for himself. Ingrid still faces questions from the police about Beckโ€™s death. She sticks to her story that it was self-defense, but the detective does not believe her fully.
