What Happened in The Ogre’s Bride Episode 1

Episode 1, titled “Destiny,” introduced the world and the main characters. The story is set in a modern Japan where humans and ayakashi (supernatural beings) coexist. In this world, being chosen as an ayakashi’s bride is considered a great honor.

The protagonist is Yuzu Shinonome, a high school girl who has been neglected by her family her whole life. Her younger sister Karin was chosen as the bride of a powerful fox spirit, and ever since, Yuzu has been ignored and treated poorly by her parents. The emotional abuse she endures is shown in every scene, making her home life unbearable.

One day, Yuzu has a life-changing encounter with Reiya Kiryuin, a beautiful and powerful ogre who declares that she is his fated bride. Reiya sweeps her off her feet and takes her away from her toxic family. The episode ends with Yuzu beginning a new life in the hidden world of ayakashi society.

About the Series

The Ogre’s Bride (original title: Oni no Hanayome) is based on the light novel series by author Kureha and illustrator Yลซ Shiroya. The light novel began in 2019 on Starts Publishing’s Novema! platform and won the grand prize at the First Novema! Character Short Story Contest.

A manga adaptation by Jun Togashi launched in Noicomi magazine in December 2021 and won the magazine’s annual girl comics ranking in both 2022 and 2023.

The series is often described as a Japanese-style ayakashi Cinderella story. It blends the classic fairy tale structure with Japanese folklore, centering on the developing romance between a human girl and a powerful ogre prince.

The official synopsis reads:

In a world where humans and ayakashi coexist, being chosen as an ayakashi’s bride is the ultimate honor. Yuzu, an ordinary schoolgirl, has been overlooked her whole life, eclipsed by the shadow of her sister Karin, a chosen bride. Just when Yuzu has had enough, she unexpectedly captures the heart of Reiya, a dashing ogre from a powerful clan who claims Yuzu as his own.

A separate live-action film adaptation was released in Japanese theaters in March 2026, but it is not the same as the anime series.
