Bobby Deol has been enjoying a strong second innings in his career, but the success of his negative roles has come with an unexpected challenge. The actor recently admitted that he is being stereotyped as a villain after the massive success of Animal and Aashram. Speaking at an event, Bobby Deol shared that he is now making a conscious effort to break away from this image and take on more diverse projects.
Bobby Deol on Being Boxed in as a Villain
Bobby Deol spoke about his career shift on the sidelines of the Jagran Film Festival in Delhi. He acknowledged that the industry tends to offer similar roles to actors once they find success in a particular type of character. The 57-year-old actor said:
“If an actor becomes successful in a particular kind of role, they keep getting similar roles. That’s what happens in the industry.”
Bobby Deol made his comeback with Prakash Jha’s web series Aashram, where he played a con man and criminal pretending to be a godman. This role paved the way for his performance as the antagonist Abrar Haque in the 2023 blockbuster Animal. Since then, he has played the villain in several films, including Hari Hara Veera Mallu, Kanguva, Daaku Maharaj, Alpha, and Jana Nayagan.
‘I Try Really Hard to Break Out of That’
Bobby Deol admitted that being typecast is a natural part of the industry when an actor finds success in a particular role. However, he is now actively seeking out varied projects to showcase different sides of his acting. He explained:
“I try really hard to break out of that. I’ve just done a film called Bandar, which was very different. Even within antagonist roles, there are different kinds of antagonists, with different shades. So I enjoy playing those. I’m also going to do a few web series that will be different.”
Trigger Warning: The following paragraph discusses a film involving allegations of sexual assault.
Bandar, directed by Anurag Kashyap, saw Bobby Deol play an aging star who is accused of r*pe by his ex-girlfriend. The film released in theatres in June and received positive reviews from critics.

“I don’t understand over-the-top comedy, slapstick comedy so much. I feel very uncomfortable doing that. And those kinds of movies, they have to be written really well. So that’s a big chance you take when you do something like that.”
