Dimple Kapadia almost did not play Tara in the 2001 classic Dil Chahta Hai. The actor recently opened up about her initial hesitation and why she eventually said yes to the role that became one of her most remembered performances. She also shared how she helped convince Saif Ali Khan to stay in the film.
The film completed 25 years in 2026. To mark the occasion, the cast and makers reunited in Mumbai on August 28. Farhan Akhtar, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Kulkarni, and producer Ritesh Sidhwani joined Dimple Kapadia for a special conversation. During the event, Kapadia shared stories about her journey with the film.
Why Dimple Kapadia First Said No to Dil Chahta Hai
Kapadia revealed that she was not immediately convinced about playing Tara. The character’s relationship with a much younger man made her unsure. She even tried to recommend other actors for the part.
“As you can see, Sid (Akshaye Khanna) has not come back. He has left me. But the character was brilliant and slightly difficult for me. Knowing me, I was trying to run away to the other side. And I was busy recommending other heroines. Guts hi nahi the ke ye role kar payenge. I didn’t have the guts to play the role. But thank God, better sense prevailed. God is kind.”
Akshaye Khanna played a key role in changing her mind. In a previous interview, Kapadia shared that Khanna called her and said, “Please do it for me”. She called him a “sweetheart” for convincing her.
The Flattering Part of Playing Tara
Despite her initial doubts, Kapadia found the role appealing for one reason. She said it felt good to have a younger man fall for her character on screen.
“I absolutely fell in love with the story. I thought it was brilliant. And it was flattering to my ego that a younger guy is in love with me.”
She quickly added a joke to lighten the mood. “But I don’t recommend it at all,” she said, drawing laughter from the audience.
In Dil Chahta Hai, Khanna’s character Sid falls in love with Kapadia’s character Tara. Tara is a divorced interior designer who is older than Sid. Their relationship was one of the film’s most talked-about aspects.
How Dimple Kapadia Helped Keep Saif Ali Khan in the Film
Kapadia also played a part in keeping Saif Ali Khan attached to the project. Khan had doubts about doing the film. He had offers to play the lead in two other movies at the same time. He was hesitant to take on a role that was part of an ensemble.
Kapadia stepped in to convince him. “Saif, you have to do this film. It’s a fantastic role. How can you not do this film?” she told him. Aamir Khan also tried to change Saif’s mind. He told Saif that Dil Chahta Hai was being made on a much bigger scale than the other films he was considering.
