Despite recent talk of superhero fatigue, Elizabeth Olsen has made it clear that her time as Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is not over. The actress confirmed she is eager to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, expressing deep affection for the role and its fans. Her commitment comes alongside the confirmation of her next MCU project, scheduled for release in 2025.
Olsen’s Enthusiasm for a Marvel Comeback
In a recent public appearance, Elizabeth Olsen spoke openly about her desire to reprise her role. She described the MCU as something she loves and consistently wants to return to. The character’s rich history in the comics provides ample material she hopes to explore in future films.
Elizabeth Olsen said:
โIt is something that I love, and itโs something I always want to return to. I think the thing thatโs been so special about the last five years is Iโve gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would. There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that Iโd love to do that I think fans also want to.โ
She also addressed the current cultural conversation about superhero fatigue, acknowledging that while some may feel exhausted by the genre, the Marvel franchise offers a unique sense of family and consistency for an actor. She values the job security it provides, which in turn gives her the freedom to choose other diverse roles.
The Confirmed 2025 Return in Marvel Zombies
While a live-action return is still on the horizon, fans won’t have to wait long to see Olsen back in action. Disney has officially confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff in the animated series Marvel Zombies, which premieres on October 3, 2025, on Disney+.
This will not be the first animated variant of the character; a zombie version of Scarlet Witch previously appeared in an episode of What Ifโฆ?. However, for the new TV-MA rated series, Olsen herself will provide the voice. The show will explore an alternate universe where a zombie plague infects many superheroes. The confirmed cast includes other well-known MCU actors like Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, and David Harbour.
Scarlet Witch’s MCU Journey
Elizabeth Olsen first appeared as Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, in a mid-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She later had a major role in Avengers: Age of Ultron and has since been a key figure in the MCU. Her story continued through films like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Her character received significant development in the critically acclaimed Disney+ series WandaVision in 2021. The show earned Olsen an Emmy nomination and set the stage for her powerful, villainous turn in the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In that film, after being corrupted by the Darkhold, her character seemingly met her end by destroying the Darkhold castle. However, in the world of the multiverse, death is rarely permanent.
Olsen’s Hopes for a Specific Comic Storyline
Looking to the future, Olsen has expressed interest in bringing one of the Scarlet Witch’s most famous and controversial comic book storylines to the screen: House of M. In this storyline, a grief-stricken Wanda dramatically alters reality and utters the famous line, “No more mutants,” which drastically reduces the mutant population.
Olsen has stated she thinks this storyline is “the coolest” and that it “would be so fun to deal with X-Men and Avengers.” While it is unknown if Marvel Studios plans to adapt this story, her enthusiasm for it signals a desire to continue exploring complex narratives for her character as the MCU begins to integrate the X-Men.
A Beloved Role
Elizabeth Olsen’s connection to the Scarlet Witch remains strong. She has credited her long-term involvement with Marvel for providing stability in her career, allowing her the freedom to work on independent films and other projects. Even as she acknowledges a cultural shift, she stands by the franchise and its audience, noting that these movies are made for the fans.
As for her upcoming return in Marvel Zombies, it assures fans that the door is firmly open for Wanda Maximoff’s future in the MCU, both in animation and, hopefully soon, in live-action once again.
