The stars of The Boys gave a major look into the show’s final season at a recent fan event, sharing details about the story and confirming the long-awaited release date. Karl Urban, who plays Billy Butcher, directly explained the main goal for the villainous Homelander as the series heads toward its conclusion.

The actor stated that at the start of Season 5, Homelander’s objective is clear: “to become a god” and “rule the world.” Urban made these comments during a panel at Tokyo Comic-Con 2025 on December 6, where he appeared with co-star Jack Quaid.

The upcoming season picks up after a dramatic and dark finale for Season 4. Homelander and the intelligent Supe Sister Sage successfully manipulated events to take control of the White House. Billy Butcher’s decision to kill the supe politician Victoria Neuman played right into their plans, allowing them to frame The Boys and justify a crackdown.

As a result, the United States is now under martial law, with Homelander pulling the strings of the government. Most of The Boys team, including Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie, have been captured and are imprisoned in a facility referred to as a “Freedom Camp.” The only known members of the resistance still free are Annie January, also known as Starlight, and A-Train, who is expected to continue a redemption arc.

With his team scattered and imprisoned, Billy Butcher’s path forward is complicated. Karl Urban outlined the primary challenge, noting that The Boys are starting the season locked up.

Karl Urban said: “However, The Boys are in prison. So, first of all, we need to get the gang back together. And then, we spend the whole season trying to stop Homelander.”

The actor warned fans to expect a intense final chapter, teasing that “nobody is safe” during the coming conflict. His co-star, Jack Quaid, who plays Hughie Campbell, was more careful with spoilers but expressed strong confidence in how the series will end.

“We canโ€™t give too much away, but I will say Iโ€™m very happy with the way everything wraps up,” Quaid said. “I think Eric Kripke and our writers did an incredible job bringing an end to this amazing story. I think fans will be very, very happy with how it all turns out.”

Beyond the goal of world domination, the final season will also dig deeper into Homelander’s damaged psychology. Showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed that a major plot will focus on the fraught relationship between Homelander and his father, Soldier Boy, who is returning for the season.

Kripke explained that at his core, Homelander’s quest for absolute power is driven by a tragic and simple need: he wants to be loved. This is especially true regarding Soldier Boy.

“[Homelander] just wants a dad to love him and be proud of him,” Kripke said in an interview. He confirmed that Season 5 will finally explore this father-son dynamic in depth, calling it “a lot of fraught emotional turns.”

This storyline was set up in Season 3 with the revelation that Soldier Boy is Homelander’s biological father, a connection that was left largely unexplored until now. Jensen Ackles will return as Soldier Boy for the final season.

The fifth season will be the last for The Boys, as announced by showrunner Eric Kripke in June 2024. The full main cast is returning for the finale. This includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jensen Ackles, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, and Jessie T. Usher. Key characters from the spin-off series Gen V, like Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, are also confirmed to appear.

The release plan was officially announced at CCXP Brazil on December 6, 2025.

The season will be available globally on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories.
