The HBO drama Euphoria has finally given fans an answer to a question that started all the way back in season one. Episode 3 of season three, titled The Ballad of Paladin, brings together Hunter Schaferโs Jules Vaughn and Eric Daneโs Cal Jacobs at a wedding. This meeting allows both characters to talk about their past for the first time since that secret recording caused so much damage. The show takes a five-year time jump, so the characters are now adults dealing with the consequences of their earlier actions. Their short but very important conversation brings a sense of closure to a storyline that has been a dark cloud over the series for years. The episode also surrounds this meeting with the chaos of Nate and Cassieโs wedding, making it a memorable and emotional hour of television.

A Painful History Finally Gets Addressed
Back in season one, Jules met Cal through a dating app while lying about her age. Cal, who had a habit of recording his s*xual encounters with young partners, made a tape of their time together without Jules knowing the full extent of his intentions. This tape became a major source of conflict in the show, used to control and hurt people. At the end of season two, Nate gave the recording back to Jules, but the two people involved never actually spoke to each other about what happened. The show did not forget this, and episode three uses the wedding setting to force them into the same room.
During their talk at the bar, Cal makes it very clear that he remembers Jules. He admits that he recorded their meeting for his own personal use and not to share with anyone else. However, the conversation also gives new, important details. Viewers learn that Cal was later arrested for a different case involving an underage person. Because of that, he is now a registered s*x offender. This news adds even more weight to their past encounter and shows that Calโs bad behavior was not just one mistake. It was a pattern that followed him for years.
โHow could I forget?โ Cal tells Jules at the wedding. โItโs not every day you f**k one of your sonโs high school classmates.โ
This line is very direct and shows that Cal, even after everything, still does not fully understand the seriousness of what he did. He talks about it as if it were just an adult mistake, not a crime involving a teenager. The show does not try to make Cal a good person. Instead, it shows him as a flawed and damaged man who cannot see his own faults clearly.
A Quiet Goodbye to Eric Dane
This episode is very important because it features one of the last performances of actor Eric Dane. Dane passed away in February 2026 after being diagnosed with ALS. He filmed these scenes while dealing with his illness, and the showโs creator, Sam Levinson, chose to work around the actorโs physical changes. Daneโs voice had become softer, and his speech was sometimes less clear. Rather than hiding this, the writers explained it as Cal being drunk at the wedding. This was a smart way to let Dane complete his work without pretending to be perfectly healthy.
Eric Daneโs performance in this episode is very strong. He plays Cal as a man who is broken but still refuses to change. He stands at his sonโs wedding, knowing that most people there have heard terrible things about him. His speech during the wedding toast is awkward and shows how disconnected he is from everyone else. When he talks to Jules, he tries to flirt and act charming, but it just feels sad and out of place. It is a powerful final moment for a character who was always hard to like but impossible to ignore.
โEric was struggling at the time, but he showed up with such grace and dignity, and he was just such a professional,โ Levinson said about Daneโs final days on set.

Jules Vaughn Has Changed and Grown Up
While Cal seems stuck in his old ways, Jules has changed a lot in five years. The episode shows that she dropped out of art school. She now works as a sugar baby, or an escort, for a very rich and strange plastic surgeon named Ellis. This career path might surprise some fans, but the show explains it as Jules taking control of her own body and life. In high school, her s*xuality was often used against her or taken advantage of. Now, she is the one setting the rules, even if those rules involve working for a wealthy client.
When Jules sits down with Cal, she is not scared or shaking. She looks him in the eye and asks if he remembers her. She listens to his excuses without getting angry or crying. At one point, Cal tells her that high school is the best time of a personโs life. Jules simply replies that she could not disagree more. This small line says everything about how much she has grown. High school was a nightmare for her because of people like Cal. She is happy to be an adult, even if being an adult is not always easy. Her ability to talk to Cal without breaking down shows a level of strength that the younger Jules did not have.
โI couldnโt disagree more,โ Jules tells Cal when he says high school is the best time of your life.
The Wedding Brings Everyone Together
The meeting between Jules and Cal happens during the wedding of Nate and Cassie. This event takes up most of the episode and is full of drama. Cassie is nervous because Nate did not come home the night before. Nate is seen throwing up in the bathroom before the ceremony. Despite these problems, the wedding itself is very fancy, with expensive flowers and a big ice sculpture of the couple. But the happiness does not last long. A man named Nas, who Nate owes money to, shows up and threatens the new couple. By the end of the night, the celebration turns violent, and Nate gets seriously hurt.
During all of this, Rue is also at the wedding but has to leave early because of her own problems with the criminal world. This leaves Jules alone to talk to Cal. The wedding setting works well because it is a place where people from different parts of the charactersโ lives are forced to mix. It feels natural that Jules and Cal would run into each other at the bar while trying to escape the awkwardness of the party.

The Tape Is Finally Put to Rest
One of the biggest mysteries of the show was what happened to the tape Cal made with Jules. In this episode, Cal tells Jules that the police never got the tape. Jules realizes that Nate must have destroyed it. This closes the loop on a story point that started in the very first season. The tape no longer exists, and the two people involved have talked face to face. After their conversation, Cal gives Jules a small whistle and a compliment, and Jules walks away with a small smile. It is not a happy ending, but it is an ending.
The show does not ask viewers to forgive Cal or forget what he did. Instead, it shows that time has passed and both people have moved into new phases of life. Cal is a registered sx offender, and Jules is a sx worker. They are both making choices that society might judge. But in this moment, they are just two people who share an ugly secret, finally agreeing to stop carrying it around. The episode does not try to make the audience feel good. It simply shows that healing can happen slowly, and sometimes it just means walking away.
The third season of Euphoria continues to air Sundays on HBO Max, with new episodes coming through the end of May.
