Sheldon Cooper might be one of TV’s most loved characters, but the actor who played him for 12 years says he is done with the role.
Jim Parsons, the 53-year-old actor who won four Emmy Awards for playing the quirky physicist, recently appeared on The View to talk about his Broadway show Titanique. The conversation quickly turned to whether he would come back if the popular CBS show ever returned for a reboot. His response was direct and left little room for hope.
“I don’t believe I would do a reboot,” Parsons told the hosts on April 17, 2026. He explained that after spending more than a decade playing Sheldon Cooper, the character feels like a part of him. But that is exactly why he is ready to move on.
“I can’t say I miss him, partly because, especially 12 years on a TV show where they’re writing for this specific actor, there’s a lot of me in that,” the actor said. He added with a small joke, “Not the genius part, but there’s a lot of me in that.”
Jim Parsons Explains Why He Does Not Miss Playing Sheldon Cooper
Many actors find it hard to say goodbye to a role that made them famous. But Parsons seems comfortable with his decision. He told the hosts that the character’s qualities and personality still stay with him in some ways. However, that does not mean he wants to put on Sheldon’s t-shirts and bow ties again.
“There’s a lot about his qualities and just who he was that I still carry with me and I certainly still get so much reaction to it,” Parsons shared during the interview.
The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019 on CBS. The show followed a group of scientists at Caltech dealing with friendship, love, and everyday life. Along with Parsons, the main cast included Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik, and Melissa Rauch. The show became a worldwide hit and still brings in new viewers through streaming platforms.
Parsons admitted that he is still surprised when fans stop him on the street to talk about Sheldon. “The longer it goes on, I’m more and more surprised when people approach me about it,” he said. “Not because I’m stupid, but because I’m like, oh, it makes sense, but I’m just not thinking it. But it’s always really sweet.”
Fans Share Stories of How the Show Helped Them Through Hard Times
During his talk show appearance, Parsons also spoke about the emotional connection fans have with the series. He said people often tell him that The Big Bang Theory helped them during difficult periods in their lives.
“It’s very moving because when you take a job as a younger actor on a sitcom TV show, I don’t think many people think it can have some sort of bigger effect than that,” Parsons explained.
Fans have shared similar feelings on social media since the interview aired. Many expressed sadness at his answer but said they understood his need to move forward.
“Sheldon will always be my favorite TV character. I get why Jim wants to do new things, but it still hurts a little to hear him say no to a reboot.”
Another fan wrote, “12 years is a long time. Let the man enjoy his Broadway shows. He gave us everything as Sheldon.”
Other Cast Members Are Open to Returning for a Reboot
While Parsons has closed the door on returning, some of his former co-stars feel differently. Kaley Cuoco, who played Penny on the show, has said she would happily come back. In October 2024, she told People magazine that she is “100 percent” ready to rejoin the cast if a reboot happens.
“I would absolutely reprise that role,” Cuoco said. “I love that character, and I always will.” She explained that the show set off her career. “I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career. I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to Chuck Lorre [the creator]. It was some of the best years of my life, and some of the most fun I’ve ever had.”
There is also a new spinoff series in the works. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will focus on Kevin Sussman’s character Stuart Bloom, the comic book store owner. The story involves Stuart breaking a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, which causes a multiverse problem. Show creator Chuck Lorre has not confirmed if any original cast members will make cameo appearances.

Parsons Ended the Original Show Because He Was Ready to Leave
Many fans may not know that The Big Bang Theory ended mainly because Parsons decided to leave. The actor informed the show’s producers before season 12 that he would not continue. His cast members later said they felt surprised by the news.
Even though Parsons does not want to do a full reboot, he did return for a special moment. He voiced the narration for Young Sheldon, the prequel series about Sheldon’s childhood. He also appeared in the series finale of Young Sheldon in 2024. He called that experience “very weird” but “also very beautiful.”
For now, Parsons is focused on Broadway. He is currently performing in Titanique, a comedic musical that mixes the Titanic story with Celine Dion’s music. The actor seems happy on stage and has not shown any signs of wanting to return to television.
