The music world lost a talented artist on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. Gregg Foreman, the founder of the alternative rock band The Delta 72 and a longtime musical director for Cat Power, was found dead at his Los Angeles home. He was 53 years old.
First responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department discovered Foreman around noon. Officials confirmed that firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner now plans to perform an autopsy to find the exact cause of death. As of now, the official cause is listed as “deferred,” meaning doctors need more time and tests to make a final determination.
Cat Power’s label, Matador Records, confirmed the news to the public. Foreman had been a key part of Cat Power’s backing group, the Dirty Delta Blues band, for nearly two decades. He served as the musical director and played multiple instruments, helping shape the sound the artist is known for today.
A Life Built on Garage Rock and Punk Energy
Gregg Foreman was born in Philadelphia on October 5, 1972, and grew up in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Music was always around him. His mother worked as an intern at Motown Records and loved soul music, while his father collected country rock records. Foreman often said that watching the movie Purple Rain made him want to pick up a guitar for the first time.
In the mid-1990s, Foreman moved to Washington, D.C., and formed The Delta 72. The band created a loud, exciting mix of post-punk, 60s R&B, and dirty blues. They released three albums before breaking up in 2001. The group played at famous festivals, including a show in Portugal in 2000 that became a notable memory for the band.
Besides The Delta 72, Foreman played with many other acts. He was a member of Pink Mountaintops, The Black Ryder, The Meek, and The Gossip. He also worked in the studio with Lucinda Williams, Linda Perry, Jesse Malin, and Alan Vega from the band Suicide.

After news of his death spread, many artists posted tributes online. They remembered Foreman not just for his music skills, but for his personality and the way he lived his life.
โHis love for music was as genuine as the pain he harbored. Wishing you peace Gregg, for all of eternity, heavenly sounds and cosmic rhythms.โ – Wesley Eisold, Cold Cave member
Actress and singer Juliette Lewis also shared a message. She thanked Foreman “for sharing your gifts with us and your humor and kindness.” Director Jim Jarmusch and musician Kid Congo Powers were among the other cultural figures who publicly expressed their sadness over the loss.
Foreman’s sister, Abbe, spoke to NBC4 Los Angeles about her brother. She described him as a positive force in the world.
“He was the light and love and everything. Everywhere he went, he brought love and light, and he was so talented.” – Abbe Foreman, sister of the late musician
