The SBS K-drama My Royal Nemesis wrapped up its run with its final episode on June 20, 2026. The series gave viewers a happy ending for the main couple, Shin Seo-ri (Lim Ji-yeon) and Cha Se-gye (Heo Nam-jun). The finale also tied up the story for Kang Dan-shim and Yi Hyeon, clearing up the soul-swapping mystery that drove the fantasy romance from the very first episode.
The show connected its premiere to its finale in a clever way. The ending revealed that it was Seo-ri who drank the poison in Episode 1. She came to the future to change Se-gye’s fate, making the whole story come full circle.
Seo-ri Makes the Choice to Return to Joseon
The previous episode of My Royal Nemesis left Seo-ri with a difficult choice. She could stay in the future or go back to the Joseon era. Only returning to the past would let her save Se-gye’s life. She chose to go back and change his fate.
Once in Joseon, Seo-ri discovered that the crown prince was still alive. The king ordered her and other court ladies to bring Yi Hyeon a message and soup from the prince’s mother. In the original timeline, the crown prince was supposed to drink poisoned soup and die to protect Dan-shim.
Seo-ri stopped Yi Hyeon from drinking the poison. They escaped from the guards together. During their escape, Seo-ri told Yi Hyeon that his life was connected to the person she loved. A guard shot an arrow, and Seo-ri took it to protect Yi Hyeon. They both fell off a cliff.
How Seo-ri Changes Se-gye’s Fate
After the fall, Se-gye woke up in his world but could not find Seo-ri. Even when he found her, she was in a coma. While waiting for her to wake up, Tae-hee told him about a museum portrait of a court lady who looked exactly like Seo-ri.
Se-gye went to see the portrait. His memories of the Joseon era returned. He now had two sets of memories. One where he drank the poison and died. Another where Seo-ri came and changed everything. He remembered what the shaman had told him. Seo-ri had gone back to save his life, which left him deeply saddened.
Kang Dan-shim woke up in the Joseon era with no memory of Se-gye. But as Se-gye cried and begged for Seo-ri to return, Dan-shim/Seo-ri heard his voice and remembered who she was. She decided to follow what the king had planned for her and drank the poison.
“Like frost flowers blooming in early summer, I’ll live freely,” Shin Seo-ri said, showing her new outlook on life.
Cha Se-gye replied, “Yes, fly freely,” and confessed, “I love you, Shin Seo-ri,” before kissing her.
This final twist revealed that the concubine who drank the poison in Episode 1 was Seo-ri and not Dan-shim. The soul swap happened when Seo-ri was in a car accident with her parents as a child. By drinking poison and dying in Joseon, she got the chance to return to her original body.
Mun-do Pays for His Crimes
After drinking poison in Joseon, Seo-ri returned to the future. She promised Se-gye never to leave him again. The pair used Mun-do’s own tricks to put him behind bars. He was jailed for bribery and other criminal activities.
Seo-ri visited him in prison. She told him that just like her, he also got a second chance. But he wasted it all. By the end, Se-gye’s grandfather accepted Seo-ri. Mun-do’s son, Seo-jun, started living with Se-gye’s grandfather. Tae-hee moved on from Se-gye and became just a business partner.
Dan-shim and Yi Hyeon’s Fate Revealed
Like Seo-ri and Se-gye, Dan-shim and Yi Hyeon survived. They were shown on the run from the king’s guards. Even while living in hiding, they seemed happy. This gave the K-drama a happy ending for everyone.
The Show’s Record-Breaking Success
My Royal Nemesis ended with record ratings. The final episode scored 14.1% nationwide, with 11.8% in the capital region. The 2049 demographic rating reached an average of 4.5% and a peak of 5.6%. It ranked first among all programs broadcast that week.

Lim Ji-yeon, who played Shin Seo-ri, received praise for her performance. It was her first full comedy role. She moved between comedy, action, and romance. Her character work across four different roles impressed viewers.
Heo Nam-jun, who played Cha Se-gye, also got attention. He transformed from a villainous chaebol to a romantic lead. He played two characters well. The modern-day villain Cha Se-gye and the Joseon-era prince Lee Hyun. His chemistry with Lim Ji-yeon made the show popular.
