A new Colombian series based on a shocking true crime is coming to Netflix this week. Fugue State 1986 tells the complex story of two literature students whose friendship takes a dark turn after one commits a horrific act of violence. The series is inspired by one of the most tragic events in Bogotá’s history.

The seven-part limited series will be available for streaming globally this December. It explores the psychological unraveling and dangerous bond between the two main characters against the backdrop of a real-life massacre.

Release Date and Streaming Information

Fugue State 1986 is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, December 4, 2025. All seven episodes of the series will be released at once on Netflix. Viewers in different countries might find the show available at slightly different times due to varying time zones.

The series will be available exclusively on Netflix. It is a Netflix Original, meaning it will not be available on any other streaming platforms. The show is primarily in Spanish, with English subtitles provided for international audiences. To watch the series, a Netflix subscription is required, with plans starting at $7.99 per month in the United States.

The True Story and Plot

The series draws inspiration from real events that occurred in 1986. The story follows two literature students, León and Jeremías. Their friendship, initially built on a shared love for books and creative ideas, transforms into something more sinister. León, who is beginning his career as a writer, discovers that his friend Jeremías has been involved in a massacre at a well-known Italian restaurant in Bogotá.

This fictional narrative is based on the real-life tragedy of December 4, 1986, when Campo Elías Delgado, a Vietnam War veteran, committed a mass shooting in a renowned Bogotá restaurant. The series uses this grim historical event to explore themes of friendship, ideology, and the origins of violence. The show does not shy away from depicting the brutality of the event but also focuses on the psychological unraveling of its characters.

“Their friendship ended up feeding each other’s most terrifying fantasies,” notes an official Netflix description of the series.

The series carries a TV-MA rating, indicating it is for mature audiences only. This is due to its strong violence, disturbing content, and mature themes.

Cast and Creative Team

The series features an ensemble cast of Colombia’s finest actors. Leading the cast is Andrés Parra, who many will recognize for his gripping portrayal of Pablo Escobar in the Colombian series Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal. He is joined by José Restrepo, Carolina Gómez, and Camila Jurado.

Other confirmed cast members include Jorge Enrique Abello, César Mora, Ernesto Benjumea, and Juan Sebastián Calero. The series is directed by Carlos Moreno and Claudia Pedraza. It is produced by AG Studios, which filmed the entire series on location in Bogotá to authentically recreate the atmosphere of the 1980s.

A Growing Slate of Colombian Stories

Fugue State 1986 is part of a larger wave of Colombian productions coming to Netflix. The streaming service recently announced a slate of ten new local titles, showcasing stories from across the country. This investment highlights Netflix’s continued commitment to producing local content for a global audience.

Other announced titles include Palace, a drama about the 1985 siege of the Palace of Justice, and the final seasons of popular series like Medusa and Eva Lasting. Fugue State 1986 adds a intense true-crime narrative to this diverse lineup.

The series will be available for streaming around the world on Netflix starting December 4, 2025.
