The JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure universe is filled with memorable characters, legendary rivalries, and deep family legacies. For fans diving into the Steel Ball Run arc, one name brings up an immediate question: Is Gyro Zeppeli connected to Caesar Zeppeli from Battle Tendency? The answer is both yes and no, and it revolves around one of the biggest shifts in the manga’s history.

A New Universe, A New Zeppeli

To understand the connection, you first need to know that Steel Ball Run (Part 7) exists in a separate reality from the first six parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Author Hirohiko Araki rebooted the series timeline with this arc. Because of this, Gyro Zeppeli is not a descendant of Will A. Zeppeli or Caesar Zeppeli in a biological sense. There is no family tree linking them through blood.

Instead, Gyro Zeppeli serves as the “alternate universe” counterpart to the Zeppeli family fans knew from Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency. Hirohiko Araki designed Gyro to fill the same narrative role that Will A. Zeppeli played for Jonathan Joestar in Part 1, acting as a mentor and ally to the Joestar of his era, Johnny Joestar. Just as Caesar Zeppeli was the grandson of Will and fought alongside Joseph Joestar, Gyro carries the torch of the Zeppeli spirit into a completely new world.

The Name That Confirms the Connection

Even though the universe changed, the family ties remain thematically strong. Gyro Zeppeli is actually a nickname. His full birth name is Julius Caesar Zeppeli.

Yes, his name is Julius Caesar Zeppeli. This is a deliberate choice by Hirohiko Araki to link him directly to the legacy of Caesar Antonio Zeppeli from Part 2. While they are not related by blood due to the universe reset, the shared name makes it clear that Gyro is the new timeline’s version of the heroic Zeppeli family members who gave their lives fighting alongside the Joestars.

The Role of the Zeppeli Family in Steel Ball Run

In this new timeline, the Zeppeli family legacy is different but equally noble. Gyro hails from the Kingdom of Naples, where his family are royal executioners, a role passed down for generations. They possess a secret technique called the Spin, which is the Steel Ball Run equivalent of the Ripple (Hamon) used by Will and Caesar.

  • Hamon (Original Universe): A breathing technique used by Will and Caesar Zeppeli to defeat the Pillar Men and Vampires.
  • Spin (New Universe): A rotation-based technique used by Gyro Zeppeli using steel balls, capable of healing injuries or causing devastating damage.

Gyro leaves his home to compete in the Steel Ball Run race to win amnesty for a young boy named Marco, who was wrongly sentenced to death. During the race, he meets Johnny Joestar, a former jockey paralyzed from the waist down. Just as Caesar learned from his grandfather and taught Joseph, Gyro teaches Johnny the secrets of the Spin, helping him regain mobility in his legs and unlocking his Stand, Tusk.

The Tragic Legacy Remains

Fans of the original series know that the Zeppeli family carries a tragic burden. Will A. Zeppeli died during his fight against Dio Brando in Part 1, and Caesar Zeppeli sacrificed himself to try and defeat the Pillar Man Wamuu in Part 2. This pattern holds true in the new universe.

Gyro Zeppeli meets his end during the final stages of the Steel Ball Run race while fighting the main antagonist, Funny Valentine. In a moment that mirrors the sacrifices of his name-bearers, Gyro is fatally wounded but not before passing on the final secrets of the Spin to Johnny Joestar. His death allows Johnny to achieve the ultimate power, Tusk Act 4, and defeat the villain. The cycle of the Zeppeli bloodline—mentorship, sacrifice, and heroism—continues, even across different dimensions.

What the Anime Adaptation Means for New Fans

With the Steel Ball Run anime adaptation officially announced, the question of Gyro Zeppeli’s relation to Caesar Zeppeli is becoming a hot topic again. For new viewers, the show will clarify that while they share a name and a heroic spirit, they exist in parallel worlds.

Gyro Zeppeli is voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki in the video games, with Yohei Azakami taking over for the upcoming anime adaptation. Fans are excited to see the iconic scenes, such as Gyro’s golden teeth bearing the words “GO! GO! ZEPPELI” and his rivalry with Diego Brando, come to life.
