The truth is still out there, and now it has a brand new home. Ryan Coogler is officially bringing The X-Files back to television. Hulu gave the official green light to a pilot for the reboot in February 2026. The project has been in development for three years, and now fans finally know what this new version will look like. The official description uses two specific words that signal a major shift for the beloved sci-fi series. The new agents will be assigned to a “long-shuttered” division. This single phrase tells viewers this is not a continuation of the old story. It is a complete reset.
The original X-Files division closed its doors years ago. Now, someone inside the FBI has decided to open it again. This setup allows Coogler to build something fresh while respecting the original show. The new series follows “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents” who form an unlikely bond while working on unexplained phenomena cases.
Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel Join as the New Agents
The casting for the reboot is moving forward quickly. Danielle Deadwyler will play one of the two lead roles. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her work in Till and received critical praise for her role in The Piano Lesson. Her co-star is Himesh Patel, known for his leading role in the Danny Boyle film Yesterday and his work in Station Eleven.
Patel and Deadwyler previously worked together on the HBO series Station Eleven. Their on-screen chemistry is already proven. Deadwyler tends to bring quiet intensity to her roles, while Patel projects a gentle and likable energy. This contrast mirrors what made the original Mulder and Scully dynamic so successful.
Jennifer Yale will serve as the showrunner. She previously worked on The Copenhagen Test. Original series creator Chris Carter is attached as a non-writing executive producer. Coogler will write and direct the pilot. His partners at Proximity Media, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler, are also on board as executive producers.
Gillian Anderson Gives Strong Praise to the Script
Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully for nine seasons, has read the pilot script. Her reaction should ease concerns from longtime followers. She spoke about the reboot at Awesome Con in Washington.
“I’ve read the script, and it was really good. It’s very different and very similar all at the same time, and it’s very special. Have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be * cool. It really is.”
Anderson also explained why she trusts Coogler with this property. She called him incredibly talented and noted his deep love for the original series.
“He’s one of the most talented filmmakers who’s out there. The fact that Chris has him as the person who’s going to be involved in the franchise is awesome, and a huge gift. You guys will see what he has in mind, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.”
Coogler himself is a huge fan of the show. He shared that The X-Files is a personal project for him because of his mother. She is a longtime superfan of the original series. He let her read some of his work on the reboot, and she got very excited.
“My mom means the world to me. She’s actually here tonight, so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”
What ‘Long Shuttered’ Means for the Story
The original X-Files division existed in the shadows of the FBI during the 1990s. Fox Mulder was the believer. Dana Scully was the skeptic. Together, they uncovered government conspiracies and encountered monsters, aliens, and things that should not exist. That division eventually closed. The revival seasons in 2016 and 2018 showed the agents working outside the system.
The new reboot takes a different path. Someone inside the FBI has decided to bring back the unit that handles unexplainable cases. This means the new agents are not stepping into an active department. They are rebuilding something from the ground up. They have to figure out why the division was shut down in the first place and what kind of cases are waiting for them.
Coogler spoke about his vision for the show on the Last Podcast on the Left in April 2025. He promised that the new episodes will deliver real scares for longtime fans.
“Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f*cking scary. We’re gonna try to make something really great and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”

Reboot Will Not Replace Mulder and Scully
Coogler has made it clear that Deadwyler and Patel are not playing new versions of Mulder and Scully. These are completely original characters with their own backgrounds and personalities. The show is a remount, not a remake. Chris Carter first announced Coogler’s involvement back in March 2023. Carter described it as a series remount with a diverse cast.
There are currently no plans for Anderson or David Duchovny to appear in the reboot. However, Anderson has said she is open to a cameo if the opportunity arises. Coogler confirmed he has spoken with her about the project. He said, “She’s incredible. Fingers crossed there.”
The reboot is being produced by Onyx Collective and 20th Television. It falls under Coogler’s exclusive five-year television deal with Disney, the parent company of Hulu. Coogler recently won a BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for his film Sinners at the 2026 awards ceremony.
The pilot is currently in development. There is no official release date yet. The original The X-Files series is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India. The two feature films are also available on digital platforms.
