The latest episode of NCIS: Origins gave fans a story they did not see coming. Instead of focusing on a standard murder case, Episode 14 went deep into the past of the team’s beloved K9 officer, Gary Callahan. The episode titled “The Beautiful Ballad of Gary Callahan” aired on April 7, 2026, on CBS. It showed viewers how Mike Franks first met the dog and how that meeting changed both their lives forever. The hour was full of tense moments, a scary injury, and a miracle that left the entire NIS team emotional.

A Puppy’s Hard Beginning on the Streets

The episode opened with flashbacks showing Gary Callahan as a tiny puppy. He was the smallest of nine pups in his litter and was born with back legs that did not work properly. Nobody wanted him, so he ended up at a kill shelter. But this little dog refused to give up. He stood up on his own weak legs and walked out of the shelter, dragging his cardboard box along with him.

For some time, Gary lived alone on the streets. He survived on his own until a young Mike Franks (Kyle Schmid) found him. At that time, Franks was working for animal control. He was not yet the tough NIS agent fans know from the original NCIS series. Franks tried to take care of the stray dog, but Gary was wild and full of energy. He tore up the couch cushions at Franks’ place and even caused Franks to lose his job.

Franks’ partner at the time, Tish (Tonantzin Carmelo), saw something special in the dog. She knew right away that Gary was not going anywhere. Franks named the dog Gary Callahan after the writing he saw on the cardboard box the dog carried with him everywhere.

Franks Had to Make a Painful Choice

The flashbacks showed that Franks eventually had to leave Gary with his first NIS handler, Artie (Daniel Roebuck). Franks made sure the dog would be cared for properly, but it was a hard choice. He did not want to give up the dog, but he knew joining NIS was the best thing for Gary. The dog needed a job and a purpose, and Franks wanted him to have the best life possible.

Years later, in the present day of 1991 on the show, Gary is living with Franks and sleeping in his bed. The bond between them is clear to everyone on the team.

A Crime Scene Turns Into a Nightmare

The team got called to a crime scene where a grocery store owner was murdered. The victim used to donate food to a food pantry at Camp Pendleton. While the team was investigating, Gary chased after a suspect. That is when everything went wrong.

The suspect stabbed Gary, and the injury was very serious. Gibbs (Austin Stowell) yelled “Agent down!” as Franks rushed to hold the bleeding dog. There were no emergency vets open in the area, so they took Gary to Doc Tango (Julian Black Antelope).

Herm (Daniel Bellomy), Gary’s usual handler, was very upset about what happened. He argued with Franks because he believed Gary should not have been out there without a leash. Franks saw Gary as both a pet and a partner. Herm was angry that safety rules were not followed. But even with the argument, everyone agreed that Gary was a hero for trying to stop the bad guy.

The vet operated on Gary and shared difficult news. Gary was stable, but the knife had damaged several nerves that control movement in his back legs. There was a real chance he would never walk again.

The NIS Team Comes Together for Gary

Herm brought Gary back to the NIS office in a small stroller. The team did not treat him like just any animal. Mary Jo (Tyla Abercrumbie) got a special bed for him to rest in. Kowalski (Michael Harney) brought freshly baked dog treats to make him feel better. Franks worked from home to watch over Gary while the rest of the team kept working on the murder case.

Even while he was hurt, Gary still helped solve the crime. Franks told the team that Gary has “the best sniffer on this side of the Mississippi.” The dog helped the team find the right killer. The person who committed the murder was not the same person who stabbed Gary.

Franks showed a lot of heart toward the young man who hurt Gary. He told the man that he would help him after he served his time. Franks saw that the suspect, like Gary, had a hard life and the odds stacked against him. Since Gary forgave the man, Franks decided to forgive him too.

A Retirement Ceremony Becomes a Miracle

The episode moved toward what looked like a goodbye for Gary. Everyone prepared for his retirement ceremony. Franks admitted to Herm that he never wanted to give Gary up, but coming to NIS was the best thing for the dog. Franks also shared that part of the reason he started working at NIS was to spend more time with Gary.

Wheeler (Patrick Fischler) gave a speech during Gary’s induction ceremony. He joked that they “hire humans, too.” Then came the retirement moment. Gary was in his stroller, and everyone expected it to be a sad end to his working days.

But Gary had other plans. The dog surprised everyone by getting up. He stood on his own two legs and walked across the room to get his medal. The room fell silent as everyone watched the dog take step after step.

“Maybe it was just grit or hell, or maybe it was a miracle, but in that moment, Gary Callahan stood up and took his first steps — for the second time.” – Mark Harmon as Gibbs in the closing voiceover

It was a powerful scene that left the whole team emotional. Because of that moment, Gary did not have to retire. He now splits his time between Franks on the weekends and Herm during workdays. Gary Callahan proved once again why he is not just a pet, but a true agent who refuses to quit.
