The Malcolm In The Middle revival brought back many familiar faces, but one unexpected guest star has everyone talking. Finn Wolfhard, known for playing Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things, shows up in the final episode of Malcolm in the Middle: Life‘s Still Unfair. This marks his first television role since the Netflix sci-fi series wrapped up in December 2025 after five seasons.
The 23-year-old actor appears as an event planner hired by Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) to help organize her and Hal‘s (Bryan Cranston) 40th wedding anniversary party. While the role is small, how Wolfhard landed the part makes for a pretty fun story.
How a Simple Set Visit Turned into a Role
The whole thing started with a phone call. Linwood Boomer, who created the original Malcolm In The Middle and returned for the revival, shared the story. Wolfhard’s agent reached out with a simple request – could Finn just come and look around the set?
Boomer said the response was immediate.
“His agent called us and said, ‘Can Finn visit the set?’ We go, ‘Shit, yeah.’ He loves the show, he‘s such a big fan of the show, and we’re like, ‘Well, there‘s a part we haven’t cast yet. Does he wanna do that? I mean, it‘s a small part.’ And he said, ‘F**k yeah, he wants to do it.’” – *Linwood Boomer*
The Malcolm In The Middle creator also mentioned that money wasn’t part of the conversation. They told Wolfhard upfront that the budget didn‘t allow for a big paycheck. He didn’t care.
Wolfhard Forgot His Lines Because of Lois
What happened on set shows just how much the Stranger Things star loves the original show. Tracy Katsky, Boomer‘s wife and an executive producer on the revival, described Wolfhard as “an absolute doll” to work with.
His first scene with Jane Kaczmarek caught him completely off guard. There he was, standing in front of Lois as she yelled at his character, and he kept forgetting he had to say his lines.
“He was standing there and he kept forgetting to deliver his lines, because he was just so overwhelmed that Lois was screaming at him, and he’d kind of go, ‘Oh wait, I have to act. OK, OK.‘ It was so cute.” – Tracy Katsky
Bryan Cranston also noticed Wolfhard’s excitement. The Breaking Bad star said that Wolfhard wanted to be on the show in some way, and when the role came up, he was all in.
A Superfan Who Knows Every Episode Detail
The crew quickly learned that Wolfhard wasn‘t pretending to like the show. His knowledge went way beyond remembering the main characters.
Katsky shared that Wolfhard would walk up to writers and producers and mention specific moments from particular episodes. He would say things like “Season 4, episode 2 is when this happened” while the people who actually made those episodes had no memory of those details.
The Malcolm In The Middle creator admitted that Wolfhard knew the show better than the people who wrote it. He would bring up scenes that Boomer himself had long forgotten about.
What the Original Cast Thought
The revival’s main cast was just as surprised to see Wolfhard on set. Jane Kaczmarek admitted she texted her daughter right away when she found out she would be working with the Stranger Things star.
“He‘s a good actor on a great show. And it was like, yeah, let’s include him.” – Bryan Cranston
Kaczmarek added that she suddenly found herself thinking, “Oh my God, that kid from Stranger Things is here. What‘s he doing here?”
Frankie Muniz, who returns as the title character Malcolm, also spoke about coming back to the role after nearly 20 years. He said that he felt at home immediately and was proud of what the cast and crew made during filming.
About the Malcolm In The Middle Revival
Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair arrived on Hulu on April 10, 2026. The four-episode revival brings back most of the original cast. Frankie Muniz returns as Malcolm, now a father with a teenage daughter named Leah (Keeley Karsten). Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek are back as Hal and Lois. Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson also reprise their roles as Reese and Francis.
Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the original series, chose not to return. Kaczmarek said that he is studying at Harvard and turned down “buckets of money” to come back. The role of Dewey was recast with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
The revival follows Malcolm as he tries to keep distance from his chaotic family while raising his own daughter. But Hal and Lois demand everyone come together for their 40th wedding anniversary party.

Showing a New Side of Finn Wolfhard
For Wolfhard, this cameo gave him something he hasn’t really shown audiences before – his comedic skills. Most people know him from Stranger Things, a show with plenty of dark and serious moments. The IT movies also put him in horror territory.
Katsky pointed out that people haven‘t really seen this side of him on screen before.
“He’s so funny. He hasn’t done things to show that he can be funny. So, we were happy for him, too. It‘s a nice little window into what that actor can do. It’s really cool.” – Tracy Katsky
The Malcolm In The Middle revival is now streaming on Hulu in the United States. Viewers in other regions can watch on Disney+ where available. India viewers can find the show on JioHotstar.
