The final episode of The Boys Season 5 has arrived on Prime Video, bringing the hit satirical superhero series to a close after five seasons. The finale, titled “Blood and Bone,” shows Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) finally facing off against Homelander (Antony Starr) in a brutal showdown. But fans of the original comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson noticed some major differences in how the story wraps up. The TV show changes several key moments, especially who lives, who dies, and what happens to Butcher after he kills his greatest enemy.

What Happens In The Boys Comics Ending

The original The Boys comics have a much darker ending. A major twist in the comic books reveals that Black Noir is actually a clone of Homelander. The clone commits many horrible acts while wearing the Homelander suit, making the real Homelander look even worse. In the comics, Black Noir kills Homelander first. Then Butcher fights and kills the clone using a crowbar to pry his head open.

After that, Butcher turns completely evil. He kills M.M. , Frenchie, and The Female (called Kimiko in the show). Butcher also tries to release a virus that would kill every supe, including his own allies like Annie January (Starlight). The comic ends with Hughie killing Butcher to stop the genocide. Hughie and Annie get together in the end, and Hughie takes over Butcher’s CIA position while blackmailing Vought to stay in line.

How The Show’s Finale Changes The Comic Ending

The Boys Season 5 Episode 8 keeps some parts of the comic ending but changes many important details. The biggest difference is that M.M. and Kimiko survive in the show. In the comics, Butcher kills both of them. The TV version gives these characters happy endings instead of violent deaths.

Another major change involves Butcher’s dog Terror. In the comics, Terror dies in a more traumatic way. But in the Season 5 finale, Terror passes away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes. Butcher finds his beloved bulldog dead in his bed right after Ryan rejects his offer to start fresh together. This loss pushes Butcher further toward his plan to release the supe-killing virus.

The show also removes Black Noir as Homelander’s killer. In the series, Kimiko uses her new energy blast power to disable Homelander’s abilities. Then Butcher beats him down and kills him with a crowbar while the whole country watches on live television. Homelander begs for his life, but Butcher does not show any mercy.

Butcher’s Death And The Team’s Happy Ending

Butcher dies in both the comics and the show, but the way it happens feels very different. After killing Homelander, Butcher goes to Vought Tower to release the supe-killing virus through the sprinkler system. He wants to kill every superhero so another Homelander can never rise again. Hughie follows him there and tries to stop the plan.

The two fight, and Hughie shoots Butcher dead. However, the show adds a moment of regret that does not exist in the comics. Right before Hughie pulls the trigger, Butcher hesitates and seems ready to change his mind. But it is too late. Butcher dies in Hughie’s arms and apologizes for everything he put Hughie through. The team buries Butcher right next to Becca’s grave.

The surviving characters get happy endings that the comics never gave them. Hughie and Annie are expecting a baby girl, and they plan to name her Robin after Hughie’s late girlfriend who died in Season 1. M.M. and Monique get back together and are getting married. M.M. also adopts Ryan, who has been depowered. Kimiko ends up working at a French cafe. The show gives its heroes a much softer and more satisfying conclusion than the source material.

Fan Reactions To The Finale On Social Media

Fans have shared mixed reactions to The Boys Season 5 Episode 8 on social media. Some viewers appreciated how the show followed the comics closely in certain moments. One person wrote on X, “It was very accurate like the comics, at least they followed up everyone’s predictions.” Another fan called the finale “absolute cinema” after watching Butcher stand over Homelander’s corpse holding a bloody crowbar.

Others felt disappointed with how the show handled Butcher’s dark turn. One viewer said, “Butcher’s heel turn was terrible because they wanted to pull comic Butcher, but in the comic there was a build up to it, in the show there was none of that.” Another person called the finale “dogshit” and said it was the worst possible outcome. Some fans also complained that almost everyone survived, making the ending feel less impactful than the comics.

A fan wrote, “The biggest problem with the series is how they somehow made it to Season 5 without Homelander wiping them out already. And the worst part? Almost everyone survived. That finale was terrible.” Despite the split opinions, many viewers praised specific moments like Ryan rejecting Homelander and destroying his god complex with just one sentence.
