The final season of Euphoria has sparked heavy debate among viewers. While many assumed creator Sam Levinson was the driving force behind the explicit content, a new interview reveals a surprising twist. It turns out, Sydney Sweeney was the one who demanded the show not hold back.
Levinson recently appeared on The New York Times’ podcast Popcast to discuss the conclusion of the hit HBO series. During the conversation, he shared that he initially planned to shoot Cassie’s scenes without any nudity. He suggested they could “shoot around” the adult content, but Sweeney immediately refused the idea.
Sweeney’s Three-Word Response to the Director
Levinson explained that he wanted to protect the actor, but Sweeney viewed the situation differently. She felt that hiding the physical aspects of her character would be dishonest to the story they were telling.
“When I first wrote it, I was like, ‘Maybe we shoot all of this and we don’t have any nudity. Maybe there’s ways to shoot around certain things?’ And she looked at me and she was like, ‘Are you kidding? I’m playing an OnlyFans model. You’re telling me you’re going to, like, skirt around it?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, OK, that’s a fair point.’” — Sam Levinson
The director praised Sydney Sweeney for her professional attitude. He called her a “totally fearless” actor who shows up ready to work every day. Levinson added that they share a deep trust on set, which allows them to push the comedy and drama further than originally written.
Fans React to the Final Season’s Most Controversial Scene
While Sydney Sweeney and Sam Levinson agree on the creative direction, the audience is split. The Season 3 finale, titled “In God We Trust,” aired on May 31, and one specific moment has gone viral for the wrong reasons.
In the episode, Cassie has a serious conversation with her sister Lexi ( Maude Apatow ) about faith and loss. However, the emotional weight of the scene was undercut by a strange prop. Cassie holds a s*x toy while discussing the Bible, and at one point asks Lexi, “Are you saying no because of the Bible?”.
Viewers immediately flooded social media with criticism. Many felt the show crossed a line by mixing religious symbolism with explicit props.
“Sam Levinson is really using the holy bible in sxual stuff for his show and making Sydney Sweeney do blasphemy and unserious things with a d*ldo in her hands while the bible is there… This is sick,” one person wrote on X.
Another user expressed frustration with the actress for agreeing to the scene, writing, “This is so embarrassing and unserious, talking about the holy bible while you are holding a dildo and doing s*xual stuff? What is wrong with Sydney Sweeney ???”

A Season Defined by Absurdity and Boundaries
This backlash is not new for Season 3. Throughout the recent episodes, Sydney Sweeney’s character has worked as an OnlyFans creator. The role required Cassie to wear a baby costume, act like a dog, and appear fully nude in several episodes.
Sam Levinson defended the absurdity of the plot. He told Us Weekly that the “gag” of the scenes is often the awkward contrast, such as having the housekeeper film the explicit content. He believes this approach keeps the show from taking itself too seriously while still addressing the reality of online fame.
Despite the mixed reactions, Sydney Sweeney has stood by her work. She posted behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram with the caption, “It’s called… acting,” defending her choice to portray the complicated role.
The third season of Euphoria is currently streaming on HBO Max in the USA, Disney+ (Star) in the UK and Canada, Binge and Foxtel in Australia, and JioCinema in India.
