The Netflix thriller I Will Find You has become one of the most talked-about shows of the year. The series, based on Harlan Coben’s novel, follows David Burroughs (Sam Worthington) , a man serving a life sentence for murdering his young son Matthew. Everything changes when his former sister-in-law Rachel Mills (Britt Lower) shows him a photo suggesting Matthew might still be alive.

The show dropped on June 18, 2026 and quickly became Netflix’s top TV launch of the year with 24 million views in its first week. But it is the finale that has everyone talking. The final scene shows David and Rachel holding hands in a quiet moment, leaving viewers wondering what comes next for the pair.

Britt Lower, known for her Emmy-winning role in Severance, has now spoken about the ending. She addressed why the show chose to end in such a subtle way.

Why the Final Scene Stays Open and Quiet

The series ends with David and Rachel holding hands at David’s father’s funeral. This simple gesture happens months after the main events of the show. Matthew has been rescued and returned to his family. Hayden (Milo Ventimiglia) , the man who kidnapped Matthew and framed David, is dead.

But the show does not confirm if David and Rachel become a couple. Lower told Netflix’s Tudum she loves the way the show ends.

“I love that the show ends there โ€“ in that quiet, reflective moment rather than a neat resolution. Rachel and David have both been through profound loss and come out the other side with a deeper understanding of who they are and what really matters. They showed up fully โ€“ for Matthew, for their family, for each other โ€“ during the hardest chapter of their lives. That’s a pretty extraordinary foundation for whatever comes next. I think they face it with their eyes open.”

Lower also told People that the quiet moment feels earned. “I think it’s such a beautiful, quiet moment, and it’s really earned from what they’ve been through together,” she said at the New York City premiere. She added, “The whole family is together, Matthew’s holding his little sister, and I think you get a sense that this family’s going to move on, one step at a time”.

Rachel and David’s Connection Goes Beyond Romance

While many viewers saw the hand-holding as proof of romance, Lower sees it differently. She told Variety that their connection is deeper than a simple love story.

“Their unspoken understanding of each other’s struggles feels more profound than any romance. They share a loneliness and a commitment to their families, united in their drive to protect the boy. In the context of their intense situation, the hand-holding gesture felt like the perfect expression of support.”

Lower said there is “really no room for much romance” given everything the characters went through. She described the hand-holding as a “gentle gesture of support” rather than a romantic statement.

Lower also noted that both David and Rachel have a “shared loneliness and a belief in their family system”. This common ground brought them together in their mission to find Matthew.

The Hayden Twist That Changed Everything

The biggest reveal of the series involves Hayden Payne (Milo Ventimiglia) . He is Rachel’s ex-boyfriend from a wealthy Boston family. Throughout most of the show, Hayden appears as a helpful ally. He gives David and Rachel a safe place to stay.

But the finale reveals Hayden’s dark secret. He kidnapped Matthew five years ago. He believed Rachel was Matthew’s mother because David’s wife Cheryl had used her sister’s name at a fertility clinic. Hayden wanted to keep Rachel close and raise Matthew as his own son.

Hayden faked Matthew’s death and framed David for the murder. He even killed his own mother when she learned the truth. The finale ends with a shootout where Hayden is killed and David is shot but survives.

Lower spoke about the betrayal Rachel feels. “What’s so devastating about the Hayden reveal is that Rachel has loved him for so long โ€“ as a friend, even after they broke up. He was someone she always trusted, someone she went to for support. So the fact that he was at the center of it all makes it that much more heartbreaking,” she told Digital Spy.

What Happens to Matthew in the End

Matthew, played by Ashton Cressman , is alive throughout the entire series. The body found in David’s house belonged to a boy named Martin Bischoff, who disappeared from a Swiss orphanage owned by Hayden’s family.

After Hayden’s death, Matthew returns to his biological family. David is fully exonerated and wins his freedom. He gets a chance to co-parent Matthew with Cheryl. The series ends at David’s father’s funeral, where David insists he will always find his way back to his son.

Show Becomes Netflix’s Biggest Hit of 2026

I Will Find You has been a massive success for Netflix. The show achieved the highest second-week viewership for any English-language scripted series on the platform in 2026. It pulled in 24 million views in its debut week.

The series comes from creator Robert Hull and adapts Coben’s 2023 novel. The cast also includes Logan Browning, Chi McBride, Erin Richards, Jonathan Tucker, and Madeleine Stowe.

Lower said she was drawn to the project because of Coben’s reputation. “I was really excited. There’s sci-fi, there’s Western and then there’s the Harlan Coben genre, and it was really exciting to be a part of,” she told People.

She also connected with her character Rachel. “It’s a very active role. Rachel is a boots-on-the-ground, very hands-on journalist. She has a fire in her belly and she’s really committed to integrity,” Lower said. “She has a strong moral compass and she’s just part of this really tight-knit family. She loves her sister and she really believes in David’s humanity from the start”.

Fans React to the Open Ending

Viewers have shared mixed feelings about the finale. Some fans on Reddit debated whether the show was written by AI, while others praised the twists. One viewer wrote, “Hayden had my ass fooled” after the big reveal.

Some fans joked on Twitter that the hand-holding proved David had been “with the wrong sister” all along. Others loved the suspense and said the show kept them guessing until the very end.

The series is available to stream now on Netflix in all regions.
