The eighth episode of the K-drama Moon River delivered a powerful mix of romance and suspense, ending with a long-awaited confession. The central story saw Prince Yi-kang’s careful plot to find the Zhen bird and expose his enemies face a major setback. The complication came not from his rival, the left minister, but from his own heart, as his growing feelings for Dal-i forced him to choose between his mission and her safety. In a dramatic final scene, a plan years in the making was undone in an instant, leading to a raw and honest moment between the two leads.
The episode begins right after Dal-i was attacked. While she recovers, Yi-kang moves forward with his investigation. A clue about a masked man buying poisonous insects every five days leads him to the palace visitor logs. He discovers that the chief court lady was leaving the palace on that exact schedule. However, when he goes to question her, he finds she has died in her cell. A mask is found with her belongings, seemingly closing the case on the assassin’s identity. This is quickly revealed to be a setup by the left minister, Han-chul, who is shown giving orders to the real, still-living masked attacker.
To protect Dal-i from further danger within the palace, Yi-kang makes a decisive move. He officially announces her as his concubine, giving her the title Lady So-hoon and the protection that comes with it. Yet, he is determined to keep her away from his quest for vengeance. He bluntly tells her that his revenge is his alone and she will play no part in it. He even tells his trusted aide, Han-chul, that his only interest in Dal-i is a debt of responsibility for saving his life, a lie that Dal-i overhears.
The Risky Hunt for the Zhen Bird
With the chief court lady dead, Yi-kang’s search for evidence against the left minister turns to the mysterious Zhen bird. He remembers seeing a bird’s shadow in the underground cave where he was once held. He and his men return to find a fledgling Zhen chick in a cage, left as a mocking trap. Learning that a mother Zhen bird can find its chick from great distances, Yi-kang decides to use the fledgling as bait to locate the much larger, poisonous mother bird. He believes finding the adult bird in the left minister’s possession would be undeniable proof of his crimes.
The search leads them to an abandoned liquor store, once owned by the family of Woo-hee, the left minister’s daughter. Woo-hee, who is secretly in love with Yi-kang’s ally Je-woon, agrees to help them in exchange for safe passage out of the city for her and Je-woon. Inside the store, they find a hidden passage into a mountain cavern. The fledgling’s excited chirping confirms they are close. After cleverly discovering a disguised door, they break in, only to find the masked assassin waiting for them. The assassin sets off an explosive to destroy the evidence.
Yi-kang acts fast to stop the blast, but in the chaos, the massive mother Zhen bird escapes its confines. It flies directly toward the royal palace, homing in on the cries of its chick. The cavern explodes behind Yi-kang, destroying any proof that the bird was ever there. The mission has failed, and the only remaining piece of evidence is now flying free.
Dal-i’s Fateful Choice and the Cost of Interference
Back at the palace, Dal-i sees the giant Zhen bird approaching. Realizing how crucial capturing it alive is for Yi-kang’s plan, she takes matters into her own hands. She grabs the fledgling chick and uses it to lure the mother bird away from the other palace guards, leading it on a dangerous chase. Her goal is to help Yi-kang, but her actions create a chaotic and unpredictable situation.
Yi-kang and his men manage to corner the bird and capture it with ropes. But his immediate reaction is not reliefโit is fury. He shouts at Dal-i for putting herself in extreme danger and interfering. At that exact moment of distraction, the powerful bird breaks free from the ropes and charges toward both of them. With no other choice, Yi-kang fires a burning arrow, killing the bird. The last piece of physical evidence is gone, and the plan is completely ruined.
Devastated, Dal-i apologizes that night, believing she has destroyed his chance at justice. This moment of shared failure and vulnerability breaks down the final wall between them. No longer able to hide behind duty or revenge, Yi-kang finally speaks the truth he has been suppressing.
“He finally tells her the truth โ that he has feelings for her and wants to protect her.”
This confession leads to their first kiss, a moment fans had been eagerly waiting for. The scene marks a major shift in their relationship, moving from a pact of convenience to a genuine, though complicated, romantic bond.

Alliances Shift and New Dangers Emerge
Beyond the central romance, Episode 8 set the stage for future conflicts. The episode confirmed that the masked assassin is not the chief court lady but a different woman working directly for Left Minister Han-chul. This reveals Han-chul as an even more cunning and ruthless opponent, willing to frame and sacrifice his own pawns.
Another significant development is the alliance with Woo-hee. Her decision to betray her father, the left minister, in exchange for a future with Je-woon adds a new layer to the political game. Je-woon, for his part, has reconciled with Yi-kang after earlier conflicts and has promised Woo-hee they will run away together once Han-chul falls.
The chemistry between the lead actors, Kang Tae-oh as Yi-kang and Sejeong as Dal-i, was a standout element of the episode. Their performances in the tense confrontation after the bird’s death and the soft confession that followed were highlighted as key moments that drove the episode’s emotional impact.
