A new TV spot for Marvel’s Wonder Man has revealed the big secret at the heart of the show. The promo confirms that aspiring actor Simon Williams already possesses superpowers, a fact that makes him a target for the Department of Damage Control and threatens to destroy his Hollywood dreams before they even begin.
The series, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, starts streaming on January 27, 2026, on Disney+. All eight episodes will be available at once.
What the Wonder Man TV Spot Reveals About Simon’s Powers
The latest promotional clip moves past simple hints and directly addresses Simon Williams’ condition. Agent Cleary of the Department of Damage Control describes Simon as “superpowered” and “incredibly dangerous,” leaving little room for doubt. The TV spot shows quick flashes of Simon’s abilities in action, including him using super strength to smash a table and losing control of his ionic energy, which results in a destructive explosion.
This reveal confirms that Simon has his powers at the beginning of the series. It shuts down earlier speculation that he might gain his abilities during the filming of the in-universe Wonder Man movie. The footage suggests his powers are tied to his emotions and are not yet under his full control, implying a volatile and potentially destructive side to the otherwise charming actor.
The Doorman Clause Complicates Simon’s Hollywood Dream
Simon’s secret creates a major problem due to a specific rule in the MCU’s version of Hollywood. Earlier previews introduced the “Doorman Clause,” a regulation that prohibits anyone with superpowers from auditioning for or acting in film and television projects.
This clause turns Simon’s hidden identity into a professional necessity. If his powers are discovered, he would be immediately banned from pursuing the acting career he desperately wants. The clause itself is a mystery. In Marvel Comics, Doorman is the alias of DeMarr Davis, a mutant with the power to teleport and become intangible. The show has not yet explained why this rule carries his name, but it may be connected to a past incident in the MCU’s Hollywood history.
The Department of Damage Control’s Pursuit of Simon Williams
The Department of Damage Control is not just a background element. The TV spot makes it clear the organization is actively and aggressively pursuing Simon Williams. Their interest is not by accident; they are focused on him because of the destruction linked to his past actions.
The DODC’s involvement firmly connects Wonder Man to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. The organization is becoming a persistent force, set to appear next in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. To help in their mission, the DODC has recruited an unlikely asset: Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley. The promo confirms that Slattery, the actor who once pretended to be the Mandarin, is aware of Simon’s powers and witnesses their dangerous effects firsthand. His exact role—whether as a handler, informant, or reluctant friend—adds another layer of intrigue to the story.
Inside the Show: A Hollywood Story with Superhero Problems
Wonder Man is structured as a show within a show. The story follows Simon Williams, an actor whose career is struggling to start. His life changes when he meets the washed-up Trevor Slattery. Together, they learn that a legendary director named Von Kovak is rebooting a classic superhero film called Wonder Man. Both actors see this project as their last, best chance for career redemption and doggedly pursue the lead role.
“I think the coolest thing to me is that it doesn’t feel like it’s about superheroes,” Yahya Abdul-Mateen II said at New York Comic Con. “To me, it feels like it’s about ambition, friendship, and dreams… We get to tell that story, do it in a clever and fun way with some attitude, and hide it in this infrastructure — the world of Marvel.”
The series is created by Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and is working on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The head writer is Andrew Guest, known for Community and Hawkeye.
Wonder Man’s History in Marvel Comics
For comic book fans, Simon Williams has a long and complicated history. He first appeared in 1964’s Avengers #9 as a villain created by Baron Zemo, who gave him super strength and invulnerability through ionic ray treatments. After a brief heroic sacrifice that seemingly killed him, Wonder Man was revealed to be in a coma.
His most famous connection is to Vision. In the comics, the villain Ultron used a copy of Simon Williams’ brain patterns to create the synthezoid’s personality, making them, in a sense, brothers. This relationship became more complex when Simon developed feelings for Vision’s wife, the Scarlet Witch. The MCU series appears to be a significant reimagining, focusing on Simon’s acting career first and leaving these classic connections for potential future stories.

The Future of Wonder Man in the MCU
The series is part of the Marvel Spotlight banner, which indicates a more character-driven, standalone story that does not directly tie into the larger Multiverse Saga. However, the show’s writer has left the door open for Simon Williams’ future.
“I think Marvel’s approach to this is let each project stand on its own, and if an audience connects with it and if they connect with the character, then they can figure out how to keep using them,” said head writer Andrew Guest.
He pointed to the return of Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery as an example of how a well-received character can find new life in the MCU. With major team-up films like Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for later in 2026, the potential for Simon Williams to eventually join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will likely depend on how audiences respond to his debut series.
