The new Supergirl movie trailer dropped on March 31, 2026, and it shows a version of Kara Zor-El that is very different from the comics. Director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira have taken Tom King‘s famous Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series and changed several key parts to make the story work better on screen. From adding Jason Momoa as the bounty hunter Lobo to giving Krypto the Superdog a much bigger role, the film is shaping up to be its own thing while still respecting the source material.

James Gunn Confirms Movie Will Not Copy Comic Book Exactly

James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, made it clear early on that the movie would not follow the comic book page by page. Speaking on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Gunn said the team is taking elements from the comic but not telling the exact same story.

“We’re not adapting Woman of Tomorrow religiously. We’re taking elements of it. That’s a great comic book. I love it. But we’re not making that exact story.” – James Gunn

Gunn explained that the tone, general approach, and structure come from the comic, but the film will go in its own direction. This freedom allows the creative team to fix some issues that readers had with the original book while also making the story work better for a movie audience.

Lobo Joins The Story Despite Not Being In The Original Comic

One of the biggest changes is the addition of Lobo, played by Jason Momoa. The character does not appear at all in Tom King’s original comic series. But in the movie, Lobo plays a major role as a bounty hunter who crosses paths with Kara during her space journey.

New action figures from McFarlane Toys give fans a complete look at Lobo’s famous motorcycle, the Spacehog. The toy shows a mostly black bike with two rocket engines on the back and a skull strapped to the front grill. This version looks different from the comic book Spacehog, which usually has bright blue and silver colors. The movie version sits lower to the ground and has a darker, more aggressive look.

Momoa, who previously played Aquaman in the older DC movies, has said Lobo is his favorite DC character. He had wanted to play this role for many years before Gunn officially announced his casting in December 2024.

Krypto The Superdog Takes Center Stage With Bigger Role

The comic book tells the story from the point of view of a young alien girl named Ruthye. Because of this, readers never get a strong sense of how much Krypto means to Kara. The movie fixes this problem by making Krypto the emotional heart of the story.

In the trailer, viewers see that Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, poisons Krypto. Kara then has only three days to travel across the galaxy to find the antidote. This change gives Kara a clear, personal reason to go after Krem. It also makes audiences care more about what happens because everyone loves a dog in danger.

The comic book handled Krypto’s poisoning in a way that some readers felt was “gimmicky.” By giving Krypto more screen time and showing his bond with Kara, the movie creates a stronger emotional connection before anything bad happens to him.

Krem The Villain Gets A Monster Makeover

Early reports suggest that Krem of the Yellow Hills will look very different from his comic book version. In the original comic, Krem appears as a human-looking mercenary with a ginger beard. He comes from a planet that orbits a red star, which is why he has no superpowers.

But inside sources say the movie version of Krem will look more like a monster. The character reportedly carries dead alien rats with him to eat, making him much scarier and more memorable than the comic book version. Many fans of the comic actually welcomed this change, saying the original Krem felt “vanilla” and not threatening enough for a main villain.

Superman Shows Up To Check On His Cousin

David Corenswet returns as Superman in the Supergirl movie, appearing briefly in the trailer. He tells Kara, “You’re not going to find your stride here if you keep going off-world all the time, Kara. I’m worried you’re not going to find your people.”

Kara responds, “Well, that’s the thing, Clark, I have no people.”

This short conversation shows the big difference between the two cousins. Clark grew up on Earth with loving parents who taught him right from wrong. Kara, on the other hand, watched everyone she knew die during her first 14 years on Krypton. She came to Earth already carrying deep pain and loss.

Director Craig Gillespie described their relationship as having an “older-sibling dynamic that can be adversarial at times.” Clark tries to be gentle and helpful, but Kara needs to find her own way.

The Movie Gives Kara Her Own Voice

The comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is actually Ruthye’s story, not Kara’s. An older version of Ruthye narrates everything, so readers only see what Ruthye saw or was told. This framing device worked on the page but made some readers feel disconnected from Kara’s true emotions.

The movie trailer suggests the film will give audiences a direct look at Kara’s pain and struggles. One powerful moment shows Krem looking at a suffering Kara and saying, “Your eyes are beautiful when you cry. A lot of pain, lot of suffering.” This kind of personal moment would not work the same way in the comic because of the narration style.

By shifting the perspective to focus more on Kara, the movie can explore her character more deeply. Viewers will see Kara the Mess – someone trying to deal with enormous loss while also trying to be a hero.

Release Date And Where To Watch

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026. The movie will play in cinemas across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other countries worldwide.

This release makes Supergirl the second movie in the new DC Universe after James Gunn‘s Superman, which came out earlier. The film stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.
