Diljit Dosanjh has reached another major milestone in his global career. The Los Angeles City Council has officially declared January 6, 2027 as “Diljit Dosanjh Day” in the city. The honour recognises the Punjabi singer-actor’s contributions to taking Punjabi music to a worldwide audience and strengthening South Asian representation in mainstream American entertainment.
The announcement was made during a private ceremony on June 19, 2026, where Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez presented Dosanjh with a framed civic resolution. The date January 6 holds special meaning as it is also the singer’s birthday.
The Moment Diljit Was Left Speechless
Dosanjh, who is currently in the US for his Aura World Tour, appeared visibly moved when he received the honour. Dressed in a white kurta, pink salwar and his signature turban, the singer folded his hands and bowed his head in gratitude as he accepted the recognition.
“My day? I’m speechless, actually. Thank you so much! What should I say? I’m actually speechless. Wowโฆ Thank you so much. My day in LA.”
According to his team, the resolution introduced by Councilwoman Rodriguez honours the “Indian-born singer, actor, and producer for his significant contributions to globalising Punjabi music and promoting South Asian representation in mainstream American culture.”
What Diljit Dosanjh Day Means
Diljit Dosanjh Day is a rare civic honour that celebrates the singer’s influence in breaking cultural and linguistic barriers while bringing Punjabi artistry to a global audience. The recognition acknowledges his role in:
- Globalising Punjabi music across international audiences
- Elevating South Asian representation in American pop culture
- Connecting Punjabi heritage with mainstream entertainment
The civic declaration for a musician often involves concerts and public celebrations in the city.
Fans Celebrate the Achievement
Fans and fellow Punjabi musicians have poured in congratulatory messages since the announcement. Social media users called it a proud moment not only for Dosanjh but also for Punjabi music and South Asian artists striving to make their mark internationally.
One Instagram comment noted that “the resolution itself was the statement.” An X user shared, “Breaking records each day. Diljit Dosanjh’s journey from regional folk music to global stages.”

A Year of Milestones and Controversies
The recognition comes weeks after Dosanjh was embroiled in controversy regarding his citizenship status. According to reports, the singer-actor became an American citizen in 2022 and has been using a US passport for international travel since September of that year. When he travels to India, he reportedly uses an e-visa.
Earlier this month, Dosanjh also faced criticism from some members of the queer community over the use of a Punjabi slur in his song “Aroma” from his new EP “The Call of Punjab.” The EP was promoted on Jimmy Fallon’s “The Tonight Show” with another track titled “Morni.”
Despite the controversies, this latest honour solidifies Dosanjh’s position as one of the most influential Indian artists on the global stage. He joins other Indian musicians who have had days dedicated to them, including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (Massachusetts, 1984), Shreya Ghoshal (Ohio, 2010), and Pandit Suman Ghosh (Texas, 2017).
The singer is also currently on the big screen in Imtiaz Ali’s “Main Vaapas Aaunga” alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Sharvari.
