DC fans will have to wait even longer to see Robert Pattinson don the iconic Batsuit. The long-anticipated sequel to The Batman has faced another setback, with its release now scheduled for 2027, a full five years after the first film. This new delay marks the second time the movie has been pushed back, following an initial shift from 2025 to 2026.

The Batman Sequel’s New Release Date

Warner Bros. confirmed that the sequel to The Batman will now arrive in 2027, though the film still does not have an official title. The movie, directed by Matt Reeves, is expected to reunite Pattinson as the dark and brooding superhero, alongside other familiar faces. Colin Farrell is likely to reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot (a.k.a. The Penguin), following his standout performance in this year’s The Penguin series.

Despite the extended wait, the film remains highly anticipated, especially after the success of The Batman in 2022 and the growing excitement surrounding the Penguin series. The finale of The Penguin is expected to set up a significant conflict between Batman and Penguin, leading directly into the sequel’s events.

Behind the Delay

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, addressed the delay on social media, stating that the primary reason for the postponement is the incomplete script. Gunn explained that the creative team, led by Matt Reeves, is dedicated to crafting the best possible film. He emphasized that a finished script is essential before moving forward with pre-production, shooting, and post-production, which typically requires around two years for large-scale projects.

“The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script,” Gunn wrote. “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write.”

The Future of Batman in the DC Universe

The uncertainty surrounding The Batman sequel’s release also raises questions about its place in the broader DC universe. Under Gunn’s leadership, the studio is focusing on a new interconnected universe, with films like Superman: Legacy leading the way. However, The Batman and its sequels are not part of this new continuity. Gunn has previously clarified that these films fall under the Elseworlds label, a separate universe that exists outside of his planned continuity.

This distinction raises intriguing questions about the future of Batman on the big screen. Will Pattinson’s version of the Dark Knight continue in its own universe, or could it eventually tie into Gunn’s larger plans? The 2027 delay gives ample time for the studio to assess how audiences respond to next year’s Superman: Legacy, which may influence how the two Batmans—Pattinson’s and the one to be introduced in Gunn’s universe—are handled in the future.

Other DC and Warner Bros. Adjustments

In addition to The Batman sequel’s delay, Warner Bros. has made several other adjustments to its release schedule. Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi film Mickey-17, which stars Pattinson, has been moved from April 18, 2025 to March 7, 2025. This change comes alongside a shift for Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners, which will now be released in April 2025 instead. Additionally, an untitled project from director Alejandro Iñárritu and Tom Cruise is now slated for October 2, 2026.

While fans may be disappointed by the delay of The Batman sequel, they can still look forward to a year full of exciting releases from DC and Warner Bros., including Superman: Legacy, which will set the tone for the new era of DC films.
