The latest episode of The Rookie took a sharp turn away from standard police work. Season 8 Episode 15, titled “Survive the Streets,” aired on April 13, 2026, and it brought back the documentary style that fans have mixed feelings about. This time, the show mixed demon cults, alien theories, and a surprise visit from two familiar faces.
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, known for their 15-season run on Supernatural, showed up as themselves. Their appearance was the big talking point of the night, but it happened inside an episode that many are calling the weakest of the season.
The Case Begins With a Strange Suicide Call
Officers John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) responded to a disturbing 9-1-1 call. They found a man named Rich Rowley in bad shape. He had a knife sticking out of his chest and kept talking about something inside him that would not let him die. He pulled the knife out right in front of them and died on the spot.
Rich was a retired LAPD officer. He used to make training videos for the department back in the 90s. He had been missing since 2022 after a boat accident, but it turned out he faked his own death to chase conspiracy theories. The situation got stranger when the team found a coffin in his garage. Inside was a body from an unsolved 2020 murder.
Connecting the Dots to a Demon Cult
Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) dug through Rich’s old training videos and found hidden messages. The videos pointed to seven cold cases. All the victims had been stabbed in the heart, and each one had a 1930 penny on their body. Copper, as the team later learned, is supposed to bind demons.
The investigation led to a B-movie horror film from the 1990s called 300 Days of Hell. Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) called it the scariest movie of the decade. The movie’s plot involved a demon named Malaphus who jumps from host to host every 300 days. Someone was acting out the movie’s killings in real life.
The trail went to Area 67, a military base. Colonel Arthur Grimm (Thomas Lennon) told the cops about Rich’s obsession with the movie and its director, Douglas Roberts. Roberts was a reckless maniac who found an old book and accidentally summoned a real demon while making his film.
Supernatural Stars Make a Surprise Appearance
This is where Padalecki and Ackles entered the story. The documentary crew contacted them because Rich had attended a fan event they did at MonsterCon. Rich was fixated on an episode of Supernatural where the brothers fought a demon named Malaphus. He asked them questions like he was testing if they were real demon hunters.
Abigail, the documentarian, compared the actors to “KPop Demon Hunters.” Jensen Ackles quickly replied, “No, not like that.” Jared Padalecki then admitted, “I mean, kind of like that.”
The actors pointed out that they only did what the writers told them. Jensen Ackles made it clear that there are no actual demon hunters in real life. The scene was short, but fans online loved seeing the duo together again.
The Documentary Style Divides Fans Again
The episode returned to the true crime documentary format that the show used last season. Abigail Tierney (Madeleine Coghlan) is back, making her own movie with the documentary crew. The format cuts away from the action to show characters being interviewed. This choice has not been popular with many viewers.
One review called the episode a waste of time and said it fails as both a procedural and a true crime show. Another critic labeled it the worst episode this season, saying the documentary style has been overused and the side stories feel out of place.
Viewers on social media had mixed reactions. Some enjoyed the Supernatural cameo but hated the documentary crew. One Tumblr user wrote, “Abigail is annoying as hell… she’s outstayed her welcome for me.” Another fan said, “I really enjoyed that whole episode. J2’s part was too short, though.”
The Cult Leader Confession
The investigation ended with the team confronting the movie director, Douglas Roberts. He had manipulated others into killing people who wronged him. He believed in the demon Malaphus, but Angela and Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) shut down his supernatural talk. They told him they knew he was responsible for the murders because each victim had crossed him in some business deal.
A priest involved with the cult had been convicted of murder years earlier. Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Angela remembered responding to that case 15 years ago when a girl died during an exorcism. The priest still insisted he did the right thing.
